We've had all kinds of news pouring out from X-men: Apocalypse from James McAvoy shaving his hair off to our first look at Angel and Nightcrawler. So with all the latest information coming from the film, it's hard not to get excited for it, even though it's still a year away.
But there is one new piece of information that has appeared over the past few days. A conformation of a new mutant appearing in [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267)! This info came in the form of a Bryan Singer Instagram post just a few days ago...
The caption on the photo says:
Shooting Caliban's place of "business" #Xmen #XMenApocalypse
Yes, Bryan Singer has just confirmed that Caliban will be making his way to our screens next year in X-men: Apocalypse!
Who is Caliban?
For anyone who isn't familiar with Caliban, here's a little bit about him...
Because of Caliban's freakish appearance since birth, he got named after the disgusting being in William Shakespeare's The Tempest. In the past he has been a member of the X-Men and the X-Force, but Caliban is most notably a member of the Morlocks.
The Morlocks are a community of mutants that live under the streets of Manhattan. Caliban was recruited by Castillo, the leader of the Morlocks at the time, for his ability to locate other mutants within a 25 mile radius of himself.
As well as his ability to detect mutants, when Caliban was panicked or stressed he developed two additional powers. These were superhuman strength and fear absorption. The strength is self-explanatory but Caliban's fear absorption allowed him to absorb psionic energy in fear from others and amplify it into the surrounding area. This basically means that he could send a nearby crowd into complete panicking frenzy! However when he calmed down he lost these extra abilities.
Now with all that information on board the question is..
How will Caliban fit into the film?
So far it seems that Caliban's role will be nothing more than a cameo or a very small role in the story because of two reasons:
- There has been no casting confirmation and not even any real buzz around the role
- The already jammed packed film doesn't seem to need another big role so a cameo would probably be the best way to introduce Caliban
Also, the way Singer emphasizes the word "business" makes me speculate that Caliban might be a dodgy, untrustworthy street dealer (or underground dealer in his case). Kinda like the character Watto in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
It would be a bit of a deviation from the comics because as far as I'm aware Caliban never was the dodgy business type. Although, Singer hasn't been afraid to stray from the source material in past films so this would-be version of Caliban is definitely a possibility.
However, what if Caliban will play a bigger role in the film? For example...
Caliban could be a Horseman of Apocalypse!
Because he has been a horseman many times in the past! When he started serving Apocalypse he was renamed 'Hellhound', and later took on the mantle of the horseman Death. Then after a break from being a horseman for a while he was reinstated and given the title Pestilence.
When he first became Hellhound, Apocalypse increased Caliban's abilities turning him from this...
As well as gaining superhuman strength, speed and durability Caliban gained greater control over his fear absorption power as a horseman. He could feed off people's inner most fears to increase his power and could even use the fears of others to temporarily paralyze them.
Horseman or Cameo?
Personally, as a horseman, Caliban is awesome! It would be really interesting to see the X-Men go up against someone who can feed off their weaknesses! It might bring a new side to the X-Men that we've never seen before on screen and as an audience, we could really engage with the characters seeing them battle against their inner demons (we'd just have to hope that it's new and not a repeat of what Scarlet Witch did to the Avengers in AoU).
Unfortunately, the way it seems to be shaping up, Caliban will most likely be just a cameo in the film. But there's always hope!!!
