Today I sat down to watch a film that I hadn't seen before and I had heard about so it intrigued me to watch it, that film was American Beauty. American Beauty revolves around a middle-aged man living in the suburbs with his wife and daughter; with a failing marriage, a dead-end job and a daughter who hates him he decides to change his life with drastic consequences. American Beauty is directed by Sam Mendes and stars Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, Mena Suvari and Scott Bakula (he is only in the film for a couple of minutes but he was a Star Trek Captain so he has to be included).
There are a few positives to this film which include: the story is good, the acting is great, the narration is cool and the character development is well done. The story in this film is really good as it has three stories all told at the same time made to feel like one story, also the main plot in the film is very well realised as you see this man bored of his life become free; this development is cool to see and works really well. Most of the acting in this film is fantastic especially Kevin Spacey who perfectly embodies his character and makes the humour in the film work, another reason why Kevin Spacey was good in this film was because of his narration which as I explained in my review of Fight Club makes films a lot better.
There are also a few negatives which are: the story progression is slow, Annette Bening's acting is bad and I wasn't emotionally attached to the characters. To expand, the plot of this film develops very slowly however this is never boring as the characters are interesting but the plot goes nowhere for some portions of the film; obviously The Academy disagreed with me but in my opinion I thought Annette Bening's performance is this film was extremely over the top and unnecessary.
Overall I really enjoyed watching this film and taking all I have said into consideration, I rate this film:
