In 2012 The Avengers started a tread for Marvel Studios. Breaking barriers in the cinematic world. Never before had a movie carried so many characters as it did. Let alone be one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Then in 2014 Marvel brought the Guardians of The Galaxy to the screen, a lesser known team with a talking tree and a raccoon as members and did amazing again. Now, coming in 2016 even after Avengers AoU we have a new star studded cast, that's bigger than ever.
I've always said that Marvel makes outstanding superhero movies, and DC makes outstanding movies with superheroes in them. Not to say that DC's movies are terrible, as The Dark Knight is probably one of top 10 favorite movies but Dark Knight Rises was horrific I wasn't into the changes made with Bane. And Marvel by far isn't perfect either. Thor: The Dark World may be the worst of their cinematic universe, and with Iron Man 2 a close second.
Of course Civil War hasn't come out yet, so we have no idea if it will be good or not. But we can rest easy and know that even with this star studded and deep cast, it can still be good and not overcrowded. Hopefully they can just dial it down a bit on the action and give more story and character development, which was a downfall for Age of Ultron. There needs to be less events happening in the movie like their was in AoU, it needs to be easier to follow for less knowledgable fans. And knowledgable fans can still be entertained with it like this, as they probably read comics, and not all comics have that 'Oh shit' ending or event, usually they are just to move the story along. I know my mom would like it more if this would happen.
In The First Avenger, Red Skull was the bad guy. In Winter Soldier, it was Hydra and Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes). Now we are getting another famous but definitely lesser known villain of Captain America, Baron Zemo Leader of The Masters of Evil (Evil counterpart to the Avengers), that were hiding under the hero team The Thunderbolts , and genetically evil as his father was the first Baron. The first Baron, Heinrich, has the mask seared to his face during a fight with Cap and his son Helmut has is mask on 24/7 because his face was disfigured.
We still don't know if they will use the Baron Cap fought in WWII or his son. Heinrich the first Baron, actually was the one responsible for his disappearance during the war, and his freezing into the ice, Red Skull was involved as well.
During the Civil War comic book series, Steve Rogers dies (it's common knowledge so it's not a spoiler). Afterwords Bucky takes up the mantle of Captain America, angered by this after finding out that the brainwashed american wasn't killed back during WWII, Baron outed Bucky's former alias (the Winter Soldier in case you forgot) to the public ruining his reputation as the new Captain. This is definitely one course the Russo Brothers should look to set up for later movies, as it would be amazing to see.
In the Winter Soldier we got to see a badass villain without even realizing it. Frank Grillo who plays Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones. Who we thought was dead after the Triskillion collapsed on top of him.
A killer mercenary who has fought Captain America on plenty of occasions, and even people like Deadpool and Wolverine. With no powers, other than the title of an expert marksman, and hand-to-hand combatant he is one villain that can fight Cap on a human level. We also know from Winter Soldier that he was presumed dead and probably brought back by Hyrda who I am guessing he works for.
Paul Rudd designated funny man known for Anchorman and any Judd Apatow movie, is playing a super hero. Ant-Man is actually an original and founding member of the Avengers and also is the one who really creates Ultron in the comics. For Rudd this is his first really big action blockbuster movie, and most people were skeptical and still are. Since he is more known for his jokes than his punches. But with the writing skills he's brining to Ant-Man and his comedic chops, he should be a wonderful addition to this cast. This will be the first time Paul Rudd or Ant-Man has been added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course we have the New Avengers as well. Scarlett Witch, Vision, War Machine and Falcon. Which will be the team that Cap leads in this movie, with Thor back in Asgard getting ready for this third movie (Thor: Ragnarok), Tony Stark taking a leave of absence, and Hawkeye going back home to his family. Plus with the Avengers going to Wakanda during AoU, Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is set to show up as well. An essential part to Avengers lore, as he is also a king to Wakanda, an island rich in Vibranium (one of the metals that made Captain America's shield).
Recently martin Freeman was cast as a character in the movie. His role is still unknown but there have been rumors that when Ulysses Klaw was on the phone in AoU and said "now minister where are we?", speculation about that line (Martin is the minister fyi) and scene has made people believe that Martin will be a one off villain for this movie. So he could be the fourth villain for this movie.
And now you're probably wondering why I said four villains. Well Baron Zemo, Crossbones, possibly Martin Freeman, and Iron Man. Yes, Iron Man not a typo. If you know the comic book story Civil War, you know what I am talking about, if not...During the Civil War the government feels that superheroes need to be under their law, after Nitro (an exploding villain who was fighting the New Warriors at the time) kills a huge number of people including the New Warriors and 60 children nearby. Iron Man signs their Superhero Registration Act and Captain America thinks against him and rebels. To really understand this and how it affects the relationships between the heroes, Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman are married and on the Fantastic Four but choose different sides.
Asa Butterfield lately has been in talks to play the new and younger (Actors ranging from 14-19 in age) Spider-Man set to show up in Captain America Civil War along with six other young actors (Asa Butterfield had been offered the role which was quickly found to be false). I think they can find someone better for sure, one that looks more like the comic book Peter Parker like Andrew Garfield did, who is not going to reprise the role (though I thought he did rather well). Other kids who have been in talks for the role are Liam James (The Way Way Back), Judah Lewis (Point Break 2015), Matthew Lintz (Kill The Messengers), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), and Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society). I think Charlie Rowe looks the most like Peter Parker from the comics but he hasn't acted in much, acting chops should be more important. Remember that all six of these young actors, could not be chosen and Marvel could choose someone else completely.
During Civil War Spider-Man chooses Iron Man's side so he signs the registration act, even getting a suit from Stark. After signing he decided, to show the world who he really is. Immediately he regretted that decision as his life was never the same for his loved ones. After he saw how crazy Iron Man had become as he used the villains they had fought for years as new allies, he betrayed Stark for Rogers and was almost beat to death, by his old allies. Found by Punisher, his new friends told him he was the most important in this war, because of what he stands for and how people get to see know what Tony Stark is really doing.
Spider-Man's actor needs to be able to show his angst and heroic tendencies as his role in Civil War is pivotal and changes a lot of things. And because he gave up his identity so quickly after working so hard growing up to keep it a secret.
Be ready to see who they introduce in the movie as well, because in the comics a lot of characters are involved that most people don't even know exist. Hopefully they pull out tons of the new characters.
Let me know what you think. Who'll play Spider-Man? Who will Martin Freeman play? What will happen in the movie? How will the Russo Brothers do?
