Having recently replayed The Last of Us for the first time on PS4, a lot of moments that I'd previously forgotten are clear as day in my mind - it's a really good game, right?! I also had the privilege of playing The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC, which only deepened my appreciation for Naughty Dog's achievements. The Last of Us 2 is under an immense degree of pressure to supersede - if Naughty Dog are in fact making another for the PS4 - the original game.
It'll have to match its emotional power, its psychological depth, its intense gameplay, beautiful world, great performances, and stellar writing. But I'm really interested in knowing what players felt to be the most intense moment of The Last of Us. The game had the same impact that The Walking Dead had for me in its early days. Deaths have become routine in the show, but in its earlier seasons they genuinely felt more shocking. So what was the ultimate moment of tension and shock you experienced in TLOU?
The Last of Us 2 - Topping the Most Tense & Shocking Moment of TLOU On PS4
There are so many moments within this game that genuinely shocked me. I don't want to point out the obvious one, but the death of Sarah...my god. It was genuinely shocking (and heartbreaking), but I wasn't as emotionally invested in the game as I would become 15 hours later. Sure, we get to know Sarah fairly well in the opening moments of the game - Naughty Dog do a nice job of subtly setting up her personality. But I feel for true tension and shock, you need more personal investment into a character.
After thinking long and hard about this, I guess the one moment that really took my breath away was the passing of both Sam and Henry within a minute of one another. Neil Druckmann and the development team were extraordinary in how they could make you care so much for someone in such a short space of time. Their devotion to one another mirrored that of Joel and Ellie's, but they didn't have the distance between them that our protagonists kept at this point - which only served to make their end more devastating.
How long do you think we spend with Sam and Henry in terms of gameplay? Does it amount to two hours? In that space of time, I came to care for both of these characters and was distraught after hearing Sam's last words and Henry's inability to cope with the loss of his brother. Such is the testament to the power of The Last of Us. But what's your moment? Which scene left you floored and totally vulnerable that the The Last of Us 2 will have to strive to beat?
