If I had to pick two current trends in films that I absolutely love, it would be live-action comic adaptations and really incredible female leads. So you can imagine my excitement in finding out that one of the most popular female-led comic series is being brought to the big screen; Lumberjanes!
For those of you not familiar with the series, Lumberjanes follows a group of five girls attending Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types (try saying that five times fast!). They quickly discover that the camp is home to all kinds of supernatural weirdness, and set out to get to the bottom of all this strangeness. The girls themselves are a classic ragtag band, and the series is a great balance of all-ages fun and stereotype-defeating badassery.
Last week, The Wrap revealed that 20th Century Fox has picked up the incredibly successful series, with Will Widger writing the script.
Boom! Studios executives Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will produce the “Lumberjanes” movie, while Adam Yoelin will co-produce. Fox executives Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones will oversee on behalf of the studio, which sees “Lumberjanes” as a priority project.
Goldberg bought Widger’s take on the comic, and Fox’s Emma Watts signed off on the deal.
The wrap also reports that Fox is eyeing up female directors for the project, which would be amazing, given that it is one of the few female-written comics with almost exclusively female characters.
While we don't have any more information on the project yet, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. Stand by for more news as I hear it!
