Now now fans of Daredevil. Let's not go nuts. As I've said before, casting rumors are more akin to pre-production fan fiction than they are to genuine news, and are often the ploys of publicity agents getting word out in a mutual effort with studios to keep the names of both their clients and the projects they may be attached to fresh and interesting. All that said, OH MY GOD JASON STATHAM AS BULLSEYE COULD YOU EVEN IMAGINE?
This rumor of Jason Statham playing Bullseye in Daredevil Season 2 seems to suggest that Marvel TV have developed much confidence after the success of Season 1 that dropped on Netflix earlier this year. Not only are they expanding the Daredevil property into its established comic book territory, but they seem to be targeting A-list Hollywood actors, and this could all start with Jason Statham. But what gives credence to this rumor?
Jason Statham expressed interest in Daredevil back in 2008
I will never cease to be amazed by Jason Statham. He forever seems the most understated yet keen actor working today. Upon a failed attempt to reboot the property, Statham explained in an interview with the LA Times that he would "love to be Daredevil". It's hard to imagine him in the red horned suit itself (although I'll be damned if he doesn't have the chin for it).
Alas, if Statham were to join Daredevil Season 2, he would be the much more loud and aggressive Bullseye, a role that movies like The Expendables and Crank have shown he could easily do. It's almost a shame that he still wouldn't be getting his stoic hero role, for that man's voice certainly complements it. Seriously, I would want Jason Statham audio books, and you know what? He would probably still say yes to that project!
What would Jason Statham's Bullseye look like in Daredevil Season 2?
I'll be the first to say that Colin Farrell's Bullseye from the 2003 movie is actually a hard one to beat. He's easily the most fun thing about that movie, saying his own name and pointing to the target carved on his head to make sure the audience understands his already blatant gimmick. Think about him this way. While characters in Bryan Singer's X-men joked and sneered at their original costume designs, Farrell's Bullseye agrees to work for Kingpin on the CONDITION that he gets a stupid costume!
[Daredevil (Netflix)](tag:1168702) is in a funny position then. It's no doubt the most hardcore, played-straight Marvel property to date, and yet it's becoming something that needs to introduce a certain level of ridiculousness to stay interesting. Bullseye is that all over! If Jason Statham were to appear in Daredevil Season 2, would he simply be some guy who's really good with a gun? It seems that just wouldn't fly with fans. Bullseye is a pragmatist, making a weapon out of anything. I can also sympathize with Marvel in their temptation to cast Jason Statham as Bullseye. If they're looking to carve a target on a guy's forehead... well, let's just say there's plenty of space for that if they cast Jason Statham.
Elektra could be added to the mix
Not wanting to open the rumor floodgates too quickly, it's worth wondering what the addition of Elektra would do to this series. Leaked audition tapes very nearly confirm her presence in Daredevil Season 2, and one can't help but suspect that a combination of her and Bullseye would change the landscape of Daredevil completely. Hell, we're now practically back to the 2003 set up with these characters involved.
Personally, if Daredevil were to slowly descend into ridiculousness from the hardcore trappings it began with, I would be delighted to watch it. What are your thoughts? Could Jason Statham make a good Bullseye, and how would you like the character to be done in Daredevil Season 2? Write a post about it, or comment below, and let's get the Daredevil fandom talking!
