A few short days ago it was announced via Twitter that James Gunn was officially done writing "Guardians of the Galaxy 2". James Gunn explained that it took him a month and a half straight to write it.
When James Gunn pitched ideas to Chris Pratt just before the announced conclusion of the writing portion of the project, Pratt said:
“I know some of the songs that are going to be on ‘Awesome Mix 2′. All I can tell you, because I obviously, I’m not allowed to tell anybody anything, nor would I want to, because it would be a little bit like telling a kid what’s under the tree before Christmas morning. I would encourage people not to poke holes in the paper and peek. Allow yourself the Christmas morning. Don’t ruin it. I will say that (James Gunn's) pitch and his idea legitimately put tears in my eyes. It is so good, it's so good. And I cannot wait to get started on it and I cannot wait for people to see what he's going to pull off with the second movie. It's so good, so big and so good."
I am excited to know someone other than James Gunn knows who Star-Lord's father is, but I need it to be a nerdy geek who'll leak it! I hate suspense, I hate to wait for Christmas morning. It's just so painful to be a nerd in anticipation.
After Chris Pratt responded James Gunn said:
“It’s a very moving script. Listen, one of the main things with Guardians of the Galaxy is not to add a bunch of characters, not to make it bigger in that way but to go deeper with the characters. And yeah, there’s going to be the big things we’ve come to expect from those big battles and action sequences and things like that, big colorful locations and beautiful set pieces, and wonderful designs by visual effects artists and all of us, but what really matters to me is going deeper into the characters and getting to know them more emotionally. And I think we have a story that’s really, truly true for everyone and it just happens to be about aliens.”
Gunn explains fewer character to come in the sequel:
“People ask for so many characters to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and they ask for so many actors who they want to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but we actually have less characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than we have in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 because everything is just getting too sprawling and too crazy for me in these superhero comic book movies. And also in superhero comics in general. There’s just too many characters so you can’t concentrate on one and really get to know that character, and I really want to get to know the characters that we know better, and yeah, we will be introducing a new character…”
Regarding the writing process Gunn said:
“I did not get any help with the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 other than I wrote a scriptment which I’ve been working on for nine months, and I wrote that very, very in-depth scriptment which is a 70-page combination of a script and a treatment and it goes through every beat of the movie, everything, and I’ve been going through that and showing that to [Marvel Studios Boss] Kevin [Feige] and getting feedback and seeing what worked and what didn’t, what characters work, what didn’t. I mean, people will be disappointed – at some point I’ll release – but I had another big character in my original draft and it was just getting too busy. I took that character out. And it’s a character I like a lot and hope to work with in the future but I just didn’t have room for that person, that character.”
Before James Gunn started writing the project he said we'd likely see 3 new characters introduced and at least one of them a female. He also said we weren't likely to see another character from Earth because being from Earth it Star-Lords unique character quality. Now, after completing the first draft of the script, Gunn is saying the number of characters will decrease. He said previously we'd get more Nebula and we would find out who Star-Lord's father is. So let's list up the characters who played any significant screen time in the first film:
- Rocket Raccoon
- Corpsman Dey
- Nova Prime
- The Collector
So let's build the cast for who we know is going to be in the sequel:
- Rocket Raccoon
We don't expect to see Nova Prime or Corpsman Dey in the sequel, and if The Collector shows up, it'll be another quick viewing, but I doubt we should run into him after the team's first experience with him in "Guardians of the Galaxy". I would say it's a safe bet Korath and Ronan won't be reappearing either, having died in the first film. So that leaves the void of a main protagonist, new team member, and Quill's father if not the same as the protagonist.
James Gunn hasn't been very consistent with his expressed desires, ideas, and conclusions about this project. Originally having multiple ideas for multiple new characters being introduced, and at least one being a female character, now we know we're only getting one new teammate. He's mentioned Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel in the past, and then later said that Marvel doesn't want her introduced until her solo film, so perhaps the female he wanted to introduce was her. If not, there are choices, like: Moondragon, Mantis, Nikki, and Angela. But now that his interest in bringing 3 new characters went down to 1, makes me less confident in the sex of the character. It really could be anyone now.
I want to say Adam Warlock should be introduced here. Harry Knowles at Aint it Cool News alerted me to a rumor that Adam Warlock's alter ego Magus may make an appearance in an upcoming Infinity War film and be the main focus. This is very interesting to me, as I personally prefer Adam Warlock/Magus over Thanos but puzzles me a bit. I know Quill's father is described as an "angel", which is really up for interpretation by an Earth woman in Quill's mother. I think it's very possible that it may indeed be Adam Warlock and that Guardians 2 might kick off Warlocks introduction. It would make for an interesting idea and then to have Quill somehow learn who his father is in some terrible battle moment like we got between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in "Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back".
In the rumor by Harry, he explains that Magus is going to be the one who collects the Infinity Stones, which is another big problem. If we're ever to get a Thanos story where he holds the gauntlet, it will be a huge divergence from the comics. It would sort of rotate the roles of Warlock and Thanos. I'd hate to find out Thanos is Quill's father and I find that less interesting.
There's simply so much to ponder in just a few snippets of news by James Gunn and Chris Pratt but realistically nothing's really changed in the past couple months. We are still wondering which characters are most likely to fill the roles of new hero and villain for the sequel.
Possible new team members if handpicked from an existing Guardians roster (those in BOLD are who I prefer):
- Adam Warlock
- Major Victory
- Bug (no news on whether Marvel has acquired the rights)
- Captain Marvel (original male version)
While I'd love to see Bug, I don't believe there's been any change in the ownership of his movie rights. Angela, while this is my preferred female character on the list, has found herself to be a witch hunter in a new comic series, and if Marvel was about to use her or take her seriously, I doubt that would be a series to find her in just before a possible appearance. There simply isn't any interesting female characters on the side of Guardians of the Galaxy for me personally. I'd have to say Ms. Marvel was most interesting but she is almost a guarantee not to appear before her solo debut. Seeing a titled hero "Captain Marvel" whether male or female before the titled solo film, would be enormously unexpected. Contender for the father role of Star-Lord, an original team member and friend of Yondu, Starhawk could be a choice. We know Gunn is a bit odd in who he selects, so it's possible we could get another 'Star' on the team. If the story was going to fiddle with time travel, perhaps Quill's one tool to find out who his father really is, we may get Major Victory as the new teammate and Adam Warlock as Quill's father. That's my solid guess.
