Honestly, I had no idea what to expect.
I was introduced to the anime after it
had originally already ran.
I did enjoy it, a lot.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead.
Our story set in modern and feudal Toyko, which revolves around the adventures of Kagome Higurashi. Who lives with her family on the grounds of a Shinto shrine. When she goes into the well house to retrieve her cat Buyo, a demon bursts out of the enshrined Bone Eater's Well (Honekui no Ido) and drags the girl into the well. Instead of hitting the bottom of the well, however, Kagome ends up 500 years in the past (1496) during Japan's Sengoku period. The demon is revealed to have been after a magical jewel known as the Shikon Jewel Shikon no Tama, (Jewel of the Four Souls) before being slain by a priestess named Kikyo. Revived by the Shikon Jewel's power in the present time, mistaking her for Kikyo, the demon attempts to kill Kagome to gain the jewel.
The Jewel had been entrusted to the Priestess Kikyo to purify and protect. Kagome, reviving the Shikon Jewel's power in the present time and being mistaken for Kikyo due to her looking almost identical. The demon attempt to kill Kagome to gain the jewel. Kagome, is able to some what fight her off, escaping. Running for her life she becomes lost, until she finds the same sacred tree that is in her own yard and runs towards it thinking she is almost home. When she reaches the tree, realizing that she is still in this strange world. She finds a young man pinned to the tree by a sacred arrow.
In a moment of desperation, she frees him to defeat the centipede demon. He is revealed by the local villagers to be Inuyasha, an Inguami. A half-demon that was sealed by a dying Kikyo fifty years ago. After being apparently betrayed by her, and attempting to take the Shikon Jewel to become a full demon. Kagome, who has been revealed to be the reincarnation of Priestess Kikyo, by Prietess Kaeke. She had thwarted Kikyo's death wish to take the Shikon Jewel away. To keep it out of the hands of those who would use it for their own desires.
During their quest, they are joined by Miroku, a perverted monk whose bloodline is cursed. The initial conflict between Inuyasha and Kiko, reveals that they were originally lovers. They were tricked by a devious half-demon Naraku, who is revealed to be born from the soul of an evil bandit named Onigumo. Created by countless demons as part of a pact gone awry, and who also placed the curse on Miroku's family.
Naraku, is after the Shikon Jewel for his own ends. Inuyasha's group is then joined by Sango, a demon slayer whose clan was killed when her younger brother Kohaku fell under Naraku's control. Over time Inuyasha enhances the Tetsugaia while he contends with Naraku's minion incarnations like Kagura, Kanna, Hakudoshi, the reanimated Band of Seven, and The Infant. Naraku's heart and seventh detachment, appearing in the form of a human baby yet can speak fluently and control people with the darkness in their own hearts. It is later revealed that the Infant's appearance was intentional by Naraku as he expected the detachment to be as devious as himself.
Naraku had intended to use Kagome to find the remaining shards of the Shikon Jewel, by having the Infant control her. However, Kagome who is Kikyo, yet also her own person. They are unable to maintain control over her. The Infant later attempts to overthrow Naraku through his vessel Moryomaru. Kiko learns that Naraku is the one that not only tricked her and Inuyasha, but also the one who killed her.
Inuyasha's team is allied by Sesshomaru, Kikyo, and leader of the wolf demon tribe, Koga. Who has a thing for Kagome. Kohaku, regains his freewill and memories as he attempts to help out of guilt for indirectly killing his father and most of their skilled clan. Finally the battle between Sesshomaru and Inuyasha come to an end over the Tetsuaiga, and enables him to be able to perfect it to its optimal abilities.
The anime was created from the original manga which started out as a Weekly Shonen Sunday, then later became a full comic. Then became an Anime as well as 4 movies. Developing the characters themselves as the story went on helped make a cohesive story line. Going into detail, but not overwhelming you with back stories. They also made it fun, yet it has its seriousness as well.
I like that they made the characters grow in their own individual ways. I truly enjoyed that they made Kagome her own character, and not simply a Kikyo cut out. Yet, they retained some of Kikyo's qualities, but kept them at a decent level. Giving Kagome a chance to flourish as her own person.
The graphics themselves weren't bad, but they became better as time went on. The subbed is always better over the dubbed, due to them re-arranging and cutting out words and scenes. Which makes it feel incomplete, some what confusing, and always annoying.
You have a love/hate relationship with Sesshomaru because of his dislike for humans and the way he treats his own brother. However, the way that he loves and protects Rin, makes you see him in a whole new light.
You also get to meet a wide variety of other character's. Some were only in one or two episodes, others a few more.
Magatsuhi, Goshinki, Ryūkotsusei (Dragon Bone Spirit) was an extremely powerful dragon daiyōkai until Inu no Taisho put him in his dormant state, Juromaru and Kageromaru, Muso, Moryomaru, Byakuya, Sesshomaru's Mother, Inu no Taisho (The Dog General), Myoga, Totosai (The Sword Maker), Jinenji (The Half Demon Farmer), Izayoi, Hosenki (oyster-demon), The Band Of Seven, Thunder Brother's, The First Demon Girl that InuYasha and Kagome fought together, Shiori (half demon girl they rescued) and the Bat Demons, Princess Abi (Assisting Corner) is a phoenix demon, Kagome's Family and friends, The Hojo Family and so many more.
This particular series ended with Naraku geting away, which ended the anime series. If you had become hooked, like many did it left a hole. Over all it was a good anime, filled with action, adventure, drama, and even love. All without holding your hand and making you feel ignorant.
