There's a Yiddish word, "chutzpah", which describes the quality of audacity. It describes someone or something overstepping their bounds, and it resonating either as disgraceful or impressive, or perhaps even both. In that sense, [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) is full of chutzpah! The sheer willingness to not only create the first ever live action Batman and Superman crossover, but to use it as the springboard for two other superheroes completely new to the DC Cinematic Universe is incredible. One person who's face seems to embody the utter gaul of DC is this lady...
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman has a lot riding on her turn in Batman vs Superman. She is set to be the first incarnation of Wonder Woman to hit the big screen. Wonder Woman has been all but absent from a general public consciousness since Lynda Carter in the 70s. There's a lot that could be achieved from this veteran feminist icon in Batman vs Superman, but let's cut the optimism, and imagine just how wrong this move could go.
With a movie as stocked as Dawn of Justice, I'm almost worried there just won't be any room for Wonder Woman. Oh sure, there's enough room for her to be in the movie in general, but perhaps the narrative and screen time simply accommodates Batman and Superman to such a degree that Wonder Woman is barely developed. The movie itself could end up a giant screen test for Gal Gadot. Jason Momoa's Aquaman is in a similar danger, but while his character simply risks being a boring guy involved in a few fight scenes, Gal Gadot risks being rendered a mere love interest for the sake of some quick pathos.
Wonder Woman's involvement with Superman
So let's get the cliche one out the way first. Wonder Woman and Superman get paired together in both canon and non-canon iterations so often, you almost forget they each have their own respective love interests. I suppose it comes from the false notion that they're gender binary versions of each other (because THAT'S a great basis for a relationship!), but would this romance even fit in Batman vs Superman? The two characters only hooked up on the page after long presences in the public consciousness. Henry Cavill's Superman only has one movie under his belt, and Gal Gadot has none!
I also can't imagine how this relationship would work on screen, given that the story likely won't call for it, and Cavill's Kal-El seems just too poe faced and serious to be shacking up with an amazon goddess. He's also already with Lois Lane at this point, but as Amy Adams said in Man of Steel "it's all downhill after the first kiss" OH GOD IT'S AWKWARD JUST TO TYPE IT!
Wonder Woman's involvement with Batman
As a romance, this has barely been explored. On the face of it, Wonder Woman and Batman is so odd, even comics stay away from it for the most part. Her core of strength and optimism, and his bitter vendetta just don't match, and that automatically makes them more interesting together. I would personally love to see Wonder Woman simply team up with Batman, for the simple reason that it would be amazing to see her fight Superman. The mismatch interactions between Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck could be a source of humor in a series that has been ardently criticized for having none. Basically, give me a Batman/Wonder Woman buddy cop movie and I will be happy!
Wonder Woman 2017
With such hasty implementation in Batman vs Superman, it's easy to forget that Gal Gadot is indeed getting her own movie after Dawn of Justice. One thing that gives me hope for this iteration of Wonder Woman is Gal Gadot herself. While she certainly doesn't have that classical robust Wonder Woman image, there's an awareness to her that seems ready to be taken to great places. Just look at her in the Fast and Furious franchise! Batman vs Superman could construct Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman as many things, but ditzy will not be one of them. Regardless of how she turns out in Dawn of Justice, we can at least be glad that Gal Gadot will head up the DCCU's first female led project. And if anything, that's more than Marvel has managed to do!
