Almost everyone has seen one of the world's most classic and beloved films The Wizard of Oz. But sometimes looking back on it, I think that it could have been done a lot better had it been made today. Now I know many people argue that it should never be remade since its a classic, but knowing Hollywood, they will eventually redo the classic film instead of beating around it by making similar films like Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return and Oz: The Great and Powerful. One day, it will be remade. But if it was made right now, here is who I would imagine to be in it.
Dorothy Gale - Lea Michele
This may not be the first actress that comes to mind when one mentions who could play Dorothy, but I'm sure she would be able to blow people's socks off in this role. Lea Michele is best known for her leading role in Glee which immediately will make some people frown because they hate the show. Whether you hated the show or loved the show, there is no denying that Lea brought plenty of star power into the series and was without a doubt one of the best actresses. That being said, I'm sure Lea would be able to use her star power to resurrect the classic Dorothy into a more modern recreation of the girl who just wants to go home.
Now it should be noted that Lea Michele has previously played as Dorothy in Legends of Oz, but that was an animated film. Lea Michele provided the voice for Dorothy, but the animators did the rest. There is only so much star power you can bring when you are a voice actor / actress. That being said, I'm sure Lea Michele would be able to blow away both the classic Dorothy and her animated Dorothy if she was given the lead role in the recreation of The Wizard of Oz.
Scarecrow - Jim Carrey
One of Hollywood's biggest goofballs would certainly be able to succeed in bringing Scarecrow back to the silver screen. Jim Carrey is very witty and funny in the roles he plays, being able to play the funny guy without coming off as the stupid guy as well, which is very hard to do. He is also able to show emotion in his roles, allowing us to take him seriously even if he is one of the funny guys. We would be able to laugh at him when he's fooling around and yet feel sorry for him when he wishes that he had a brain.
Tin Man - Kenan Thompson
Kenan Thompson is best known for being one of the longest-running cast members on Saturday Night Live. He had his first break-out role in Good Burger and also played the title role in the live action adaptation of Fat Albert. He has plenty of acting experience and is beyond ready to finally get his name out there beyond SNL. Through his work as a comedic actor, he gained many hilarious qualities that could easily be used in the portrayal of Tin Man. I can easily see him trying to talk while actually being rusted and then start to move through a still rusted metal body. Kenan Thompson could make an amazing Tin Man if given the part.
The Cowardly Lion - Zach Galifianakis
This one was tough, especially considering that my two top choices have already passed away by this point (John Candy and Chris Farley). However, one of the biggest comedy actors currently rising to the top is Zach Galifianakis who does not always get the credit he deserves. Most people only know him as playing awkward characters like Alan in The Hangover and an awkward version of himself in his web series Between Two Ferns. He is much more than that, however. In movies like Birdman and The Campaign he was able to show more sides of his acting skills rather than just repeated versions of Alan. He would easily be able to apply his incredible acting abilities to the Cowardly Lion to make him without a doubt the most hilarious and heartwarming character in the entire movie.
The Wicked Witch - Sarah Jessica Parker
No, I did not just cast her because of her nose. But that's part of it. Sarah Jessica Parker has many acting talents that she has not been able to truly express lately. She became so caught up in Sex and the City that she has not been able to book many roles since. Returning to the Silver Screen as the Wicked Witch would not only bring even more star power to the film but would also bring Sarah Jessica Parker back into the spot light. It would be a win-win for both of them. Plus, I'm sure she would be able to do an amazing evil cackle.
Glinda - Kathryn Hahn
Most people have no clue who Kathryn Hahn is. She is best known for having minor roles in Stepbrothers, We're The Millers, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Anchorman and Parks and Recreation. She usually plays the wife of a supporting character or the friend of the female lead. But this would be her chance to shine. Hahn is a very talented actress that would be able to nail the role Glinda the Good Witch and would finally get her name to be known out in Hollywood.
The Wizard - JK Simmons
That's right, Oscar winner JK Simmons would be, in my opinion, the PERFECT choice for The Wizard. Simmons is an amazing actor. It's so hard to describe it, but anyone who has seen Simmons in any role (except his well known angry roles like in the Spider-Man trilogy) would be be able to see why I chose him. He can be so calm and confident, even if he's just a fake wizard controlling an animated talking face. Even after he is deemed fake, people would still be able to trust him due to his extreme confidence. But why would JK Simmons take this role? He just won an Oscar, after all. Well mainly because this is one of those few roles that can make an actor legendary without having to do much work. Though the Wizard is considered one of the biggest characters in the entire movie, he doesn't appear all that much. So Simmons would only have to work at the beginning and at the ending of filming to become even more of a legend. Only a fool would not go for that opportunity.
So There You Have It!
That is my casting of a remake of the Wizard of Oz. What do you think? Anything you'd change? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Or should the idea of remaking the Wizard of Oz not even be mentioned because it is so 'disrespectful'? Let me know in the comments. And thanks for reading!! :D
