Do You Bleed?
Arguably one of the biggest movies to be released next year is Warner Brother's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and why wouldn't it be? The entire concept of The Dark Knight facing off against the Man of Steel is a showdown we've all been dreaming to see happen on the big screen ever since we were little kids. Unlike that other Warner Brothers superhero movie that can't seem to keep things under wraps, we've heard and seen very little about BvS other than the teaser that was released a couple months ago. However, with the Licensing Expo set to begin in Las Vegas tomorrow, it looks like we now have our first read of the movie's synopsis:
Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
So what does it mean?
Like many fans have speculated, this little snippet seems to confirm that Batman's hostility towards Superman is a direct result of all the damage that happened in Man of Steel. Superman is seen as a modern-day savior and looking at the teaser again, you can clearly see a divide in opinions when it comes to Kal-El. Is he mankind's redemption, or an unknown force that doesn't belong here? It clearly seems like Batman believes the latter.
But hold up now. What's this about a new threat quickly arising?
This is probably the clearest indication of where the plot seems to be going. Batman and Superman will obviously go head-to-head until a new danger emerges that will force them to work together and start their friendship. But who or what exactly is this new threat? Lex Luthor? It's pretty safe to say that while Jesse Eisenberg's character will certainly play an antagonistic role, he won't be the main villain, at least not for this movie. The main indicator of this being this line:
"A new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before."
Lex is a bad guy, but as far as my knowledge of the character goes, his beef is with Superman, not the innocent people of the Earth!
One more thing to take into consideration is that whatever threat rises, it's got to be someone big enough to take on Batman, Superwoman AND Wonder Woman! I know Aquaman and Cyborg are also in the movie, but rumors have their roles pegged to simple cameos and/or little screen time. That said, here are my villain guesses:
Darkseid can easily go toe-to-toe with Superman and on his own can put up quite a challenge for the combined efforts of the entire Justice League. He's cruel, cunning, downright evil and definitely qualifies as a good reason for Batman and Superman to put their differences aside and work together. Darkseid is my main bet for this movie's villain and I'd be shocked if they didn't at least tease him in some way! I know some might say that he's more of a Justice League level villain, and I normally would agree with them. In fact, I would have probably saved Darkseid for the Justice League movie if it wasn't for...
His name is no euphemism. Doomsday is infamous for being the one to kill Superman and he even beat Darkseid to a pulp. I honestly believe (and hope) that DC puts him as the main villain in the Justice League film. However, I would not be at all surprised to see him show up in BvS, especially if was right at the end as an epic set-up for the Justice League film.
Brainiac may not be as powerful as my previous two candidates on this list, but he doesn't need to be. Not when he's got, well, brains! There have been moments where Superman was able to defeat Brainiac on his own, as well as moments where he needed the help of the League to take him down. Not to mention I could clearly imagine Lex Luthor and Brainiac working together in an attempt to defeat the Man of Steel.
So there you have it! These are just my top three picks for the movie, but I really hope to see at least one of them be the main villain. They each bring their own style of destruction to the table, and they each kick major ass.
