The God of War franchise is set to make a return this year but on the PS4, with God of War 3 getting a HD remastered release after only five years. But our sights aren't only set on this re-release, with the next instalment of the franchise having been confirmed earlier this year. Kratos and his insanely fun gameplay have been one of the biggest draws to Sony's systems over the years - they couldn't keep this god-killer from the Playstation 4 for long.
But after the climactic events of God of War 3, where are Santa Monica Studio planning to take Kratos in God of War 4? Will he even appear in this game? Will it be a prequel, like Ascension? Or will Sony's most iconic character return to slay some of the other gods that mankind has created over the years?
Which Gods Could Kratos Take On in God of War 4?
So with almost all of the leading gods in Greek culture decimated by Kratos, who else could he face? If Santa Monica want to continue with the trends that they've already established in the series, the next logical step would be to have Kratos take on an army of new gods. But which ones and in which era? Regardless of which one Santa Monica Studios pick, they'll be sure to teach us a great deal about the narratives and characters that permeate throughout that specific culture.
With Thor kicking ass in the likes of [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035), the most popular culture they could dive into would be that of the Norse gods. Imagine Kratos taking on the likes of Odin and his children Thor, Balder, Hoder, Tyr, Bragi, Heimdal, Ull, Vidar, Hermod and Vali. These gods have similarly fascinating stories attached to the Greeks, and I'd personally love to see God of War 4 introduce me to more of their history.
They'd have to do some pretty crazy time travel in God of War 4 to get Kratos back in time to face these deities - but it'd be worth it! The Egyptian gods are some of the most historically recognisable figures in the worlds. With the likes of Anubis, Seth, Ra, Osiris, Nut, Khepri, Isis, Horus and Apophis to name a few, God of War 4 could star some pretty amazing gods. But would it be too strange a plot to have Kratos go back in time to take these guys on?
Probably the closest that Santa Monica Studio could keep the Greek setting of the trilogy, would be to set God of War 4 in the heart of Rome. The Romans worshipped a main pantheon of 12 gods: Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Vesta, Ceres, Diana, Venus, Mars, Mercurius, Neptunus, Volcanus, and Apollo. Taking all of these on alone would be pretty awesome - but what kind of motivation are we going to need for this to take place?
The reason that Kratos took on all of the Greek gods with such a furious rage, was due to the immense pain he suffered under their rule. He himself was forced to kill the innocent and even his own family under the rule of Ares. His disdain for the Gods grew with each and every incident, which eventually culminated in the remarkable events of God of War 3.
Would simply slapping Kratos into a new setting work? How could they motivate the man to kill all of them in a similar fashion to the original trilogy without things feeling forced?
