As I have stated before in several of my other articles, Moviepilot is all just a big community where different like-minded individuals can share their love of film and geek culture. I love working with other Creators on collaborative projects, like when I worked on the MP Hunger Games with Nick Reilly a couple of days ago.
This time, I have teamed up with nine other talented Moviepilot Creators to bring to you our list of favorite movie film quotes, ten at a time. So if you like what you read here, look out for the next nine parts to complete the MP Creator 100!
1.) "I have a bad feeling about this." - Han Solo (Star Wars)
This is the first quote I always come to when thinking of popular movie quotes. Star Wars is one of the most if not the most recognizable franchise of our time. Even those who haven't watched any of the movies know who Darth Vader is. So when thinking of my favorite quote, I had to go straight to Han Solo. This one line in the Death Star trash compactor started a trend that remained constant in the entire Star Wars franchise.
2.) "Life is pain Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something". - Westley (The Princess Bride)
I've been watching The Princess Bride for as long as I can remember, and this is one of the quotes that has stuck with me since the beginning. When Westley delivers the line, you can't help but take it humorously, even though the quote has a sad truth to it.
3.) "All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given to us." -Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)
If I had to choose one inspiration for myself as a writer, it would be the magnificent J.R.R. Tolkien. His wisdom and creativity have no boundaries, and he single-handedly created a massive world that we are still exploring today. His books have so many great quotes in them (usually from Samwise or Gandalf) and the one I chose is my personal favorite.
4.) "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Beuller (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
While I don't necessarily agree that it's fine to skip school, steal your friend's dad's car, and start joyriding around Chicago, you can't really disagree with Bueller's excuse for doing so. Life does in fact move pretty quickly, and we should all appreciate our surroundings when we have the chance.
5.) "That's when you know you found someone special. When you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share silence." - Mia Wallace (Pulp Fiction)
One of the staples that Tarantino's films are best known for (other than excessive violence) is the lengthy and intricate dialogue. In Pulp Fiction, one of my favorite exchanges is between Vincent and Mia, where Mia delivers this signature quote. This was one of the quotes that made me stop and think about it for a second, to realize how true it actually is.
6.) "There are no two words in the English language more harmful than 'good job'." - Fletcher (Whiplash)
Whiplash is one of the best new movies I have watched in a long time, and one of the best parts of the film is when Fletcher sits down with Andrew and explains his unorthodox teaching methods. Even though Fletcher had come off as this tyrannical man throughout the entire movie, when he says this quote, you realize his sincerity. You start to realize that there is a method to his madness, and there is a very basic truth to his words.
7.) "Language was invented for one reason boys - to woo women -and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do." - John Keating (Dead Poet's Society)
I haven't watched Dead Poet's Society for a while now, but it is still one of my favorite films. Robin William's performance is legendary, and he has so many good quotes. Out of all of the avaliable quotes, I chose this one for the list because it represents my attitude as a writer. When using the English language, you have so many eloquent words at your disposal, and I make a point to try and keep a diverse vocabulary when writing.
8.) "There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path." - Morpheus (The Matrix)
This is basically a commentary on the space between having a thought and carrying it out. I sometimes have problem with the execution of plans, so this quote often reminds me that thinking isn't everything. Sometimes you have to do something about those thoughts.
9.) "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all." - Andrew Clark (The Breakfast Club)
This quote really hits home when I think about my personal life. I was in high school not too long ago, and in high school there are the obvious individuals that you see in the hallways that are considered the "weird" ones. That has always bothered me, because I consider myself weird as well. Even my friends have their own peculiarities. Just because some people stand out the most doesn't mean that those individuals are "weird". We're all technically bizarre in someone else's eyes.
10.) "I never wanted the throne. I only ever wanted to be your equal." - Loki (Thor)
Loki is one of my favorite fictional characters, and that's not because he's clever, or even because he know magic. It's because of his backstory. He has the most sympathetic background of nearly any character I have ever encountered. When he says this quote to Thor in the first movie, you see that he is being genuine. He really doesn't want to just rule the world because he thinks he's better than everyone else, he just wants to be loved by his father as much as Thor was.
