Movie quotes. There's just something about them that resonates with us. Whether it's Darth Vader telling Luke Skywalker, "I *AM* your father," or Indiana Jones muttering, "Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?" certain movie lines stay with us forever. An extremely talented group of creators have gotten together to collaboratively create a list of our top 100 movie quotes, with each creator contributing 10. Here is a list of some of the greatest one liners and inspirational quotes to ever appear on the silver screen.
1) "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage." - Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones isn't your average college professor. He's also the man who introduced the concept of an archaeologist's toolkit including a revolver, a fedora, and a bullwhip. In the above quote, he's talking to Marion Ravenwood, the daughter of his mentor, Abner Ravenwood. It is revealed that the two have a rather rocky relationship, and Indy desperately wants to patch things up as only Marion is in a position to help him keep the Ark of the Covenant out of the hands of Adolf Hitler and Indy's unscrupulous rival, French mercenary archaeologist, René Belloq. By this point in the film, the pair have gone through a lot together and are finally on their way to comparative safety, trying to catch their breath after their most recent narrow escape. However, their relaxation is short-lived when the boat they are on is attacked by a German submarine and Marion is taken prisoner. Indy hides and manages to sneak aboard the sub when it returns to its base. There, he is captured and he and Marion are forced to watch as the Ark is opened. However, the entire group, except Marion and Indy, are killed, and our hero and heroine escape to the United States, only to have the Ark confiscated by the US government and placed in a warehouse in Area 51.
2) "You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive toward. They will race behind you. They will stumble. They will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal." - Jor-El, Man of Steel
In this scene from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, Clark Kent has just met his Kryptonian father, Jor-El, who tells him that using his powers for the benefit of society will inspire humanity to achieve greater things. Jor-El says that Clark can be the bridge between the two peoples. This entire film is riddled with inspiring quotes, but this is one of the best.
3) "Here's looking at you, kid." - Rick Blaine, Casablanca
This film is a timeless classic. In it, Humphrey Bogart plays Rick Blaine, an expatriate of the United States, who operates a high-class casino/bar in Casablanca. A petty crook entrusts Rick with "letters of transit," which are essentially unrestricted travel documents to anywhere for the bearer. Rick claims to have no interest in the events transpiring around him (World War 2), but when Ilsa Lund, the girl who broke his heart years before, walks into his establishment, everything goes crazy. She tells Rick that her husband, Victor Laszlo, an important Czech Resistance leader, is desperately needed in America, and the only way he will be allowed out of Casablanca is with a letter of transit. A rival of Rick's informs Laszlo that he believes Rick to have the letters. Confronted by this claim Rick says that he does indeed have the letters but refuses to sell them. Finally, Ilsa threatens Rick and he promises to help, making her believe that Laszlo will continue alone and she will remain with Rick. Laszlo is arrested on false charges, but Rick secures his release by framing him for the much more serious crime of having the letters in his possession. However, when the authorities show up to arrest Laszlo, Rick holds them off at gunpoint, allowing Ilsa and Laszlo to escape. This line was actually not intended to be in the original film at all, but Humphrey Bogart said it while teaching Ingrid Bergman to play poker between takes and asked that it be added to the script.
4) "Maybe one day, I'll wear this thing to a party I was really invited to." - Ben Gates, National Treasure 2
In this film, we see Nicholas Cage reprising his role from National Treasure, as Benjamin Gates, a man of many talents who, in the first film, discovers a hidden map on the back of the Declaration of Independence, which ultimately leads to the largest treasure trove the world has ever seen. Back for a second outing, Gates is this time out to prove that his ancestor was not involved with the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The only way he can do it? Kidnap the President. And you can't walk up to the President in anything less than a spiffy tuxedo, right? In the first film, Gates sneaks into a party at the National Archives in order to steal the Declaration. This time, he dons the same tux to infiltrate the President's birthday celebration.
5) "The moment you think you know what's going on inside a woman's head... is the moment your goose is well and truly cooked." - Howard Stark, Captain America: The First Avenger
Howard Stark, father of Iron Man and in his own humble opinion, "the greatest mechanic in this country," offers Captain America some very timely advice on women in this scene. Ironically, it turns out to be advice that he does not himself follow, as he later marries and his wife gives birth to that genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, Tony Stark. This quote has to have been written by a woman, or else by a man who clearly understands that any incursion into the female psyche is worse than deadly.
6) "Phil? His first name is 'Agent'." - Tony Stark, The Avengers
This is Tony Stark's reaction when he discovers that his girlfriend Pepper is on a first name basis with a man Tony only knows professionally. He is clearly jealous, but look at Pepper's smug expression. She knows he's jealous and is rubbing it in his face, choosing to enjoy every minute of it.
7) "Gotham deserves a better class of criminal. And I'm gonna give it to them." Joker, The Dark Knight
Heath Ledger gave everything he had to this role, and as a result, totally crushed it. His portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime is arguably the most iconic version since the character's creation. As good as I think Jared Leto will do in Suicide Squad, nobody will ever quite match the quirky perfection of Ledger's Joker. RIP, Heath.
8) "What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law." - Sheriff Buford T. Justice, Smokey and the Bandit
Sheriff Buford T. Justice was perhaps the ultimate personification of a stubborn lawman who will catch his culprit no matter what it takes. The Bandit tries to smooth talk him and fails. Justice chases him from Texas all the way to Georgia and takes heat from many but lets none of it faze him.
9) "That's how it starts. The fever. The rage. The feeling of... powerlessness. That turns good men cruel." - Alfred Pennyworth, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
Yes, I realize that Dawn of Justice has yet to come out in theaters and its release date is still almost a year away. But this quote is pretty profound and actually causes the viewer to take a step back and think about it. Besides, it's Jeremy Irons, so enough said.
10) "Why is the rum gone?!" Captain Jack Sparrow, Curse of the Black Pearl
This is perhaps one of Jack Sparrow's most classic quotes. He and Elizabeth Swann have been marooned on an island that was once used as a smugglers' cache. Jack is horrified when he discovers that Elizabeth has set fire to the rum in order to create a signal for the Imperial Navy, which is attempting to locate them. This line was also the source of one the greatest remix videos ever.
