Taking inspiration from an article by Reid Jones posted a few days ago featuring "Gay and Bisexual Superhero Actors and Actresses," this article will explore some stars of movies and TV shows that you may not have known were part of the LGBTQ community.

While being LGBTQ in today's world is steadily becoming more accepted, especially in countries such as the U.S., which are continuing to pass marriage equality laws and the increasing spread of awareness and understanding, there is still plenty of ignorant ire directed the way of LGBTQ folks.

Hate of a group is so often spawned and cultivated from lack of contact between individuals. If you ask a person who expresses homophobic views how many LGBTQ people he or she knows, the answer will most likely be closer to zero than not. The unique ability of pop culture figures is their power to enter into our houses and make us feel like we really know them or their character intimately. It is therefore so important that we acknowledge stars who are LGBTQ (whose on-screen personalities may even be straight), because the more people are aware that LGBTQ people exist everywhere, and maybe even play some of their most beloved characters, the more the idea of acceptance and inclusion can come to fruition in our society.

Without further ado, here are some of the great actors and actresses in Hollywood you might not have known were also LGBTQ:

1. Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story

Paulson stated during an interview with Vulture:

“Guys don’t ask me out because they think I like women. Women don’t ask me out because they don’t know what I am. Do I have to write a sign that says EQUAL-OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER?”

2. Cherry Jones, 24

Cherry Jones has been openly lesbian for most of her career. She also dated Sarah Paulson from American Horror Show from 2004 to 2009.

3. Wentworth Miller, Prison Break

In August 2013, Miller came out as gay when he declined an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. He stated:

"The situation [in Russia] is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly"

4. Matt Bomer, White Collar

Bomer came out as gay in 2012 during an award acceptance speech at the Humanitarian Awards in Palm Springs. He has now been married to his partner for four years and they have three sons together.

5. Robin Roberts, Good Morning America

Roberts has been in a relationship with Amber Laign, a licensed massage therapist, for over 10 years.

6. Raven-Symone, That's So Raven

Symone stated on Oprah in October 2014:

"I don't want to be labelled gay, I want to be labelled a human who loves humans. I'm tired of being labelled."

She has been in a relationship with model AzMarie Livingston since 2011.

7. Samira Wiley, Orange Is the New Black

Wiley is currently in a relationship with one of the Orange Is the New Black writers, Lauren Morelli.

In an interview with Pittsburg City Paper, Morelli stated:

"Everyone there [on set] has been so supportive of us. It felt like a pretty seamless transition."

8. Kristian Nairn, Game of Thrones

Nairn came out during an interview with a Game of Thrones fan website, WinterIsComing, a year ago, stating:

"It’s important to stand up and be counted. I have and always will stand my ground."

Also, HODOR!

9. Emily Rios, The Bridge

In an interview with After Ellen, Emily Rios stated, in regard to her character, Adriana, on the show The Bridge:

“I’m gay, personally, so being Mexican and a lesbian — this is why I love the character because I deal with the same type of things with my own family.”

10. Matt Dallas, ABC family

Dallas came out via Twitter in January, 2013, when he also announced his engagement to musician Blue Hamilton.

11. Jussie Smollett, Empire

Smollett stated to Variety, after a backstage interview with Ellen DeGeneres:

“There’s never been a closet that I’ve been in.”
“It was a bigger deal to everyone than it was for me. But at the same time I do understand why it is something to talk about.”

12. Meredith Baxter, Family Ties

Baxter came out to People Magazine in a 2009 interview and married her long-time partner, Nancy Locke, in December of 2013.

13. Chad Allen, Dr. Quinn

Allen didn't choose to come out of the closet in 1996, but after photos were published of him kissing another man he became public and continues to be involved in LGBTQ activism. Sadly, the actor decided in April of this year to leave the profession of acting via this YouTube video.
