One particular proclamation you hear gamers make time and time again after finishing Naughty Dog's masterpiece, The Last of Us is this: " I wish I'd never played it so that I can experience it again for the first time." It's the kind of statement I've made with the likes of The Sopranos, because you just want to go through that state of awe and emotional power all over again but completely new - free of expectation.
For those of us that have experienced The Last of Us more than once, The Last of Us 2 represents the only hope we'll ever have of forgetting what it feels like to be immersed in this world in a completely fresh manner. There are so many things that we all want from The Last of Us 2 - Naughty Dog are really going to have to up their game if they hope to eclipse the power of the original. But what's the one thing you want in the sequel more than anything?
What's the One Thing Naughty Dog's Sequel, The Last of Us 2 Needs For You?
I can't wait to engage with the Uncharted series again, what with the Uncharted Remastered Trilogy hitting the PS4 this year, and Uncharted 4 arriving in early 2016. But I'm thinking of it to be more of a brief digression before the main event. However, Neil Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog may seriously surprise us all with the emotional power and action-packed joy they can cram into the final Uncharted adventure. I'm refusing to get hyped for it though.
But The Last of Us 2 is a different story. After experiencing the quality that the original game exudes, we can't help but desire the sequel to supersede it. There are a lot of things I want in The Last of Us 2, like far more open areas, more combat variations, new enemies, combat that we saw in Left Behind and a new story as deep and satisfying as the original. But the main thing I want Naughty Dog's sequel to achieve is this - make me forget about The Last of Us.
Should Joel & Ellie Be in The Last of Us 2?
The last thing I want to be doing in The Last of Us 2 is making comparisons with the original. I don't want to be pulled out of emotional moments by comparing them with narrative beats we're familiar with from The Last of Us. The Last of Us 2 needs to feel totally fresh, otherwise it will inherently be compared with the original. That's why I'm so worried about Naughty Dog bringing Joel and Ellie back. I won't be as invested with their story if I'm constantly comparing their adventure to the original.
The Last of Us 2 should feel like a totally fresh experience - something that I never saw coming. It'll be tough for Naughty Dog to do, that's for sure. But I really desire Naughty Dog to make me forget about the original in the course of their sequel, purely due to its emotional power and involving campaign. At the end of The Last of Us 2, I want to be able to wish I hadn't played it, for I know I'm not going to be able to experience the same power again for the first time. But what do you want from it?
