Prepare for another young adult novel to make the leap to big screen when the Red Queen materializes in theaters in the near or distant future. The Red queen is among the many young adult novels that is currently being prepped for a film that could launch the career of an unknown or offer the chance for an old star to make a comeback,a big comeback indeed. You can check out the book now if you want to get a feel for it before the film comes out or you can risk it and go in blind.
Here's the synopsis for the book:
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.
To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?
The book is a mash-up of elements from genres such as the Hunger-games, X-men, and Game of Thrones. there are fantasy and dystopian elements since people possessing silver-blood are bestowed with supernatural abilities and are considered to be members of the social elite, while the reds are merely poor commoners. you can see the similarities to X-men since there are a group of people who have special powers, but instead of being oppressed and hunted like mutants in X-men movies, they are pampered and highly privileged, the roles are essentially reversed since the reds seek to bring down the silver bloods in the form of a bloody rebellion. It's similar to hungers games since we have our hesitant but strong female hero who is caught between the power of the elite and a looming rebellion that seeks to destroy an established system, she's the katniss of the story and is forced to make decisions that tell us more about her own human nature, and the nature of others who surround her. Of course some will simply write this off as a cheap knock-off of red rising or a typical movie about a young individual who challenges authority amid political and social unrest.
More to the point, Elizabeth banks is being courted to direct the film. After her success with Pitch Perfect 2 which managed to deliver at the box-office and once again put Universal on top as one of the highest earning movie studios. Banks has been known for a number of roles, but her role in the Hunger games films have added to her success. She has established herself as a rookie director and seems like there are people willing to bet that she could handle the scale and budget of a YA tentpole film. If Banks gets this job then she would be working with a dramatically bigger budget, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at the situation. We can speculate how this film will do in the long-run,but it's best to wait and see how this comes together.
