Deadline has revealed that Academy Award Nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) has been cast in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange and will play the villain; Baron Mordo.
Baron Mordo is a villainous sorcerer in the comic books. Deadline reports the character won't be as evil in the big screen adaptation, perhaps not even playing the main villain. Deadline has said that this iteration of the character may be an amalgamation of many Doctor Strange characters.
In the comic books, Mordo and Strange are both students under The Ancient One who will most likely be played by Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer). Both have similar abilities yet Mordo often uses black magic and summons demons. Chiwetel Ejiofor will co star across from Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) who'll play the titular hero.
I think this is great casting, whilst I'm not so familiar with the stories and characters of Doctor Strange, I am a huge fan of Chiwetel Ejiofor who blew us all away with his heartbreaking and powerful performance in Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave for which he was Oscar Nominated and shared some screen time with Benedict Cumberbatch. The film is lining up to have a largely British cast as Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton all hail from the UK.
The report states that Ejiofor may not be the villain, but I hope he is. You may remember Ejiofor in Joss Whedon's Serenity as the villain and he was great!
Marvel has never really been wrong with a casting decision before, they're getting the best people for these roles and actors are lining up to work with the studio as they produce both critically and commercially successful films.
The film is being directed by Scott Derrickson, best known for his horror films; Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil. Doctor Strange hits theaters November 4th 2016.
