Though I feel like I've been waiting a lifetime for it, the hugely anticipated sci-fi shooter Halo 5: Guardians is not far off, its release date of October 27, 2015 edging ever closer.

To tide you over until then, Microsoft has released some tantalizing details about what we can expect from the latest installment in this epic franchise. For starters, Gunnery Sergeant Buck, who first made an appearance in Halo: ODST, returns as a fully playable character, tasked with hunting down the legendary Master Chief. And, he's played by none other than Nathan Fillion!

As has been confirmed, gamers will get a chance to play both sides of the action-packed story, switching between Spartan Locke and the iconic Chief. Check out this newly unveiled gameplay demo, featuring never before seen squad mechanics and a totally badass looking scan system:

Also announced was the new 'Warzone' multiplayer mode, featuring 24 players. Plus, they'll be a bunch of extra AI-controlled soldiers populating the battlefield, meaning they'll be no shortage of things to shoot at (was there ever in Halo?).

With all this mayhem taking place on maps four times the size of previous games, Warzone is going to be pretty special. Get a sneak peek of it below:

This could definitely turn out to be the best game in the entire series - roll on October!
