Never let life's limitations stop you from doing what you love.

Rather than letting life slow her down, Asta Young has chosen to embrace all challenges. New to cosplay, she's not afraid to use her size to her advantage.

I guess I need to ask how does one go from model to artist?
They're both painfully crowded mediums.

Asta Young
Well, to be honest, I am not a model. For some reason I somehow got portrayed and labeled as one in social media. I am mostly an artist, and also slowly branching myself into the world of cosplaying.

Then I need to ask the one question all artists hate:
Where do you draw inspiration?

Asta Young
My inspiration comes from my everyday life and in my dreams. Being a little person at 4 foot 5, a lot of my painting ideas come from the experiences I have faced growing up as a little person.
Another inspiration are my dreams. I always wind up with the craziest dreams every day, and I would wind up waking up and writing it all down in my notebook.
I also get my inspiration from today's pop culture, and taking it and morphing it into my own weird art.

You're not a Terry Gilliam fan are you?
He'd appreciate the "morphing" of "pop culture".

Asta Young
I wouldn't say I am a die hard fan of his, but I do really appreciate and enjoy his works such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Maybe I can relate because I feel like he has such a weird mind like mine.
I also did one of my favorite pieces based off Fear and Loathing and Star Wars. It is called "Fear and Loathing in the Dark Side" replacing the typical movie poster with Darth Vader.

You should check out the his unofficial Trilogy of the Imagination when you get a chance.
Zombies, Grumpy Cats, Vaders...
You seem pretty open ended as to what falls onto the canvas.

Asta Young
I will certainly check it out[Laughs]!
Yeah, what can I say? Its the power of imagination. The whole world is out there just waiting to be painted.

What mediums do you paint in?

Asta Young
I usually paint with acrylic. I find it to be very easy to use and it dries a lot faster. It helps because I like painting in the moment. I have tried oil before, but I lack the patience for it.

What sparked your interest in cosplay?

Asta Young
I remember one day seeing how people were able to dress up as characters they like to a convention, so my fiancée and I decided to go to one of our local cons. I fell in love the first time we went.
Since then, I started looking up conventions for an artist alley table and at the same time cosplay. I am new at this, so it has been a huge learning curve as far as making costumes. I love it though.
The community itself is just filled with awesome people that are very accepting.

I'm hesitant to bring this up, but I'd like to ask about your panda head avatar in "Short Perspective", "Panda Growth", and "Is That a Child?".

Asta Young
The panda is very significant to me. Growing up, my mom always compared me to one. She told me pandas are very rare and special in China, and there aren't too many of them. She compares them to me because of my height. Also because I am Chinese and Cantonese.
Since then, I have incorporated the panda in many of my art pieces that have to symbolize what I go through as a little person.

I can very much appreciate that.

Thank you

I can't think of anything else to ask or add to this.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans and followers?

Asta Young
Well, all I have to say is this, I may be 4 foot 5, but at the end of the day I am just a regular person.
I paint, your typical regular nerd, happy in love, and just living life every day as best as I can.
Thank you to those that have been following and supporting me through this journey. Never let life's limitations stop you from doing what you love.
