Sci-fi has taken over just about everything--film included. Every year for the next few years fans of the genre can expect to be wowed, amazed, and entertained by multiple sci-fi feature films that are in development or are already in the process of being released. Since the Sci-fi genre is so malleable and flexible, why not a Sci-fi romance set aboard a starship headed for a distant colony planet? It just so happens that such a film is being made and will eventually be released if the anticipation and stellar pairing of the two leads has anything to say about it. Passengers is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Morten Tyldum, who, if you've seen his filmography, has a pretty solid resume of quality films. It'll be interesting to see him make the leap to Sci-fi and possibly revisit the genre with a different film in the future. Fingers crossed.

Here's the plot synopsis:

The spaceship, Starship Avalon, on its 120-year voyage to a distant colony planet known as "Homestead II" and transporting 5,259 people has a malfunction in two of its sleep chambers. As a result, two hibernation pods open prematurely and the two people that awoke are stranded on the spaceship, still 90 years from their destination.

The premise right away sounds intriguing, especially the reason for why Chris Pratt's character is aboard the ship, bound for an off-world colony. The pairing of Pratt and Lawrence is possibly the biggest advantage the film has since both are genuinely talented, charitable, well liked by fans and the movie-going public, and have interesting opinions about day-to-day life. One could could sit for a while, pondering, wondering what kind of chemistry these two will have on screen together since both are capable of eliciting laughs, but can also take dramatic turns if and when they need to. And as for Chris Pratt possibly winning an Oscar? The prospect is too intriguing to ignore since winning such an award could be a major turning point in his career. Oh, and Lawrence getting nominated and possibly winning an Oscar for the second time sounds great too. Stay tuned for more updates.
