Ever wondered what it would be like to actually be in an episode of The Walking Dead, scavenging for supplies, desperately fending off the zombie hordes and generally doing anything it takes to avoid becoming dinner? Well, that rather grim fantasy is now possible, thanks to this nifty little piece of technology...
The Star VR Headset
Virtual reality is now, well, a reality - and what better use for this terrifyingly immersive tech than engrossing yourself into a nightmarish post-apocalyptic scenario in the newly announced Overkill's The Walking Dead?!
Those brave enough to strap themselves into this headset at E3 - the Comic-Con equivalent for video games - were treated to a visceral head trip, transported inside AMC's pulse-raising fictional world. Confined to a wheelchair, they were then handed a shotgun to help them fend off the undead hordes - the closest you'll ever get to experiencing a real life fight for survival!
To make matters even more intense, the Star VR hardware is no ordinary headset. Featuring a 210 degree horizontal field of vision, this super impressive piece of kit allows for a full peripheral view, so you can spot those flesh-hungury walkers flanking you from the sides!
Tyler Sparks, producer at Starbreeze (the makers behind Overkill) summed up the unique experience nicely:
"People say ‘immersive' all the time, but they don’t really understand what it means. This is immersive. When you’re in there, the things you hear and see it’s almost indistinguishable from reality, which is a little intimidating."
To be honest, I'm not sure I've got the nerves for such a realistic experience - the blood-thirsty zombies are scary enough on my television, without me having to get up close and personal. Still, it seems like a wicked showcase of technology - the horrifying future really is here!
