The adaption Neil Gaiman's book American Gods into a TV series has just been green-lit. This breaking news was revealed on Wednesday by Starz, the US Cable network behind the series. The adaption of American Gods is something that Gaiman fans could only dream about before. American Gods, released in 2001, is an multi-award winning fantasy novel. The book is a blend of modern mythology, along with ancient mythology. With a pinch of Americana and Fantasy blended into the mix.

Who is producing the American Gods television series?

Fans will be pleased to hear that American Gods has talented writers behind it, Bryan Fuller (Creator of Hannibal, writer of Heroes and Pushing Daisies) and Michael Green (co-producers of Heroes and Smallville). The best part of all is that Neil Gaiman himself will be working as executive producer on the series, ensuring it stays in the right direction.

''Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic, and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have Starz above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise. Neil Gaiman has given us a lot of room to really dig into the characters and he’s shared them with us. It’s an immigration story really, at its heart, so it feels like we can unpack that in a way that allows us to tell a signature story." - said Fuller in a statement

In an interview Gaiman spoke about his excitement for the new series:

“I am thrilled, scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious. The team that is going to bring the world of ‘American Gods’ to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie,” he said. “Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…”

Are you ready for the concept art?

Firstly, the co-executive producer Bryan Fuller teased with this image on his twitter, by artist Nicolas Delort:

Then, the co-executive producer posted this creepy and macabre concept art for American Gods. Revealing that Jim Carson has been chosen as illustrator. This is just concept art and no locations are revealed, but it looks like the show will be staying on the darker side which is fitting for the book.

I know some of you may be reading this article feeling a little uneasy that a book that you treasure is being turned into a television series, but fear not, Starz chief executive Chris Albrecht has some reassuring words for you:

“Starz is committed to bring ‘American Gods’ to its legion of fans. With Bryan, Michael, and Neil guiding the project , we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years.”

Giving the series a green-light along with concept art being revealed is a major step forward for this adaption from book to television series. With castings happening and the series now moving forwards, the next thing for fans is to be given a premiere date for the series.
