When it comes to fictional characters, like Spider-Man for instance, there are certain characteristics we've grown accustomed to. A lot of the time, during casting, we look for those same traits to be fulfilled by whoever we get as our star.
Well, what if I were to tell you that there are actual mandates agreed to between Sony and Marvel that dictate who we get as our Spider-Man in the feature film franchise.
You may remember the Sony hack from a few months ago. Within that hack came interesting details surrounding agreed-upon Spider-Man character traits. Check out what the terms are below.
And here are the Peter Parker traits...
This isn't to say that they aren't interested in venturing away from a straight, white, male version of Spider-Man. In an animated version, Donald Glover voiced the black-latino Miles Morales, and there was also a lot of fan support for Glover to play Spider-Man on the big screen.
However, when it comes down to it, it would still take a re-negotiation to switch that up. I myself don't really have a problem with the fact that they are keeping Peter Parker the same with the new movies; I just think it's a little strange that it's down in writing.
We'll see what happens. I won't hold my breath, but I do think Donald Glover as Miles Morales on the big screen is something I badly want to see. Or, similarly, I think a gay Spider-Man would be very groundbreaking and awesome.
