Star Trek fan Michael Gummelt has been invited to pitch his idea for a new Trek TV series titled Star Trek Uncharted, which he has fleshed out in detail on his website, http://www.startrekuncharted.com/
This is the first time a fan has been approached to pitch their own Star Trek show (or, perhaps, any show). Gummelt is in no way involved with television or film production, and is, in every way, a newcomer to that world. He states that "'Star Trek Uncharted' is set sometime in the future, distant enough that it doesn’t really matter which universe it takes place in." His treatment for the show doesn't depend on a large understanding of the Star Trek universe, and is meant to introduce the brand to a new generation, and, apparently, that's pretty interesting to Paramount. This expansive treatment includes storylines and dream casting of characters. With the 50th anniversary of the original series coming up, it's fair to expect that some movement on the newest Trek series (the 6th, counting the animated series!) would begin soon, so be looking out for that.
As for now, I'm just incredibly excited and proud that a fellow fan of a show, with no industry connections, was able to make something like this happen, even if his pitch hasn't been accepted yet. I think I speak for everyone of every fandom when I say good luck, Michael!
