News has recently emerged that Marvel might be interested in having famous celebrity singer/part-time actress Beyoncé Knowles for a role within the course of their ever-expanding cinematic universe. Admittedly, when people think of Beyoncé, they don't exactly think of an actress (let alone a superhero). That being said, Marvel tends to go with very well-accepted casting choices, where talent is concerned, so if they want her aboard, they must see acting potential, right?
That being said, let's get to work on what role the Queen Bey could possibly fit into best. Before anyone gets their hopes up, the company that seems interested in casting Beyoncé is Marvel Studios, not FOX, so as far as anyone knows, any and all characters for the X-Men and/or Fantastic Four are off-limits. Likewise, while they are potentially just as viable, I'm going to try to avoid 'love-interest' roles.
Now, having said all of that...here are some of the characters that I have in mind, that I think would fit her to a T (or a B):
MISTY KNIGHT (Heroes for Hire):
Misty Knight is a tough former NYPD cop, who loses her arm in a confrontation with criminals. Instead of settling for a desk job, she gains a handy new robotic arm from one Tony Stark (maybe you know him?) and teams up with ally Colleen Wing, to start her own crime-fighting agency. Eventually, the two become part of a team known as the Heroes for Hire. Here's where things get interesting.
The Heroes for Hire have as their most famous members, the biracial bro duo Luke Cage and Iron Fist, each of whom is slated for a solo show, before teaming up for a group series, The Defenders. Still, with or without those two, they have a host of other superheroes on their alumni roster to choose from. Could Beyoncé be on her way to a starring role for in Marvel's potential Netflix Phase 2?
MONICA RAMBEAU (Captain Marvel):
Monica Rambeau has had many hero mantles. She has gone by Photon. She has gone by Pulsar and Daystar. And she currently goes by Spectrum. At one point, though, she was referred to by the honored mantle of Captain Marvel. Her light-spectrum manipulating powers have made her an asset on The Avengers, their offshoot teams the Mighty Avengers and Secret Avengers, and more. What if she had a significant role in Captain Marvel alongside Carol Danvers?
While Beyoncé is certainly not my first choice for the role (I actually had someone in mind such as Danai Gurira), I can certainly see how the connection might be made. After all, she's certainly got an attitude that says 'bold and unafraid'. Plus, hair color and style is a minor detail, easily adjusted for the purpose of an acting role. Not to mention, there are plenty of dark-skinned characters who have been cast with lighter-skinned actors. If they wanted it to work, it probably could.
TAMARA DEVOUX (Captain Universe):
This character would be amazing to see on the big screen at all, I think it's pretty safe to say. Such a being is not limited to a singular person--and a number of different people have held the role, of different races, genders, cultures, etc. Tamara Devoux is just one of many, who have been gifted with the immense cosmic capabilities of the Uni-Force, in an effort to help The Avengers and others.
What's so great about Tamara Devoux is that she is anything but one of the heroes that catch the center attention of the big screen. Her power would only arise in time of the most dire need, and then, back to her ordinary life. To make the very most of this character's very limited tenure as an Avenger, Beyoncé would first show up in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, and then take the identity of Captain Universe for a short but crucial part in Avengers: Infinity War Part 2.
CLEA (Doctor Strange):
Okay, I sort of broke my rule about leaving out 'love interest' choices, but only because Clea is just so doggone cool, for the limited role she plays! She hails from the Dark Dimension, making her the (illegitimate) daughter of royalty, as well as the niece of Doctor Strange's arch-foe Dormammu, and a powerful and impressive sorceress in her own right. Her knowledge and power is invaluable!
This choice is perhaps unorthodox, yes, but it isn't without its possibilities. After all, Beyoncé is rather famous for (among other things) rocking a blonde hairstyle and dancing about in racy attire. It wouldn't be so much of a stretch to see her with stark white hair, dressing and gesturing like a master magician. And let's not forget, Chiwetel Ejiofor is Baron Mordo, so race is obviously not a factor here.
SHE-HULK (Jennifer Walters)
Yeah, I said it. Jennifer Walters is an ace lawyer, and cousin to none other than our own beloved huge green rage monster himself, Bruce Banner. After an accident leaves her in dire need of a blood transfusion, her dear cousin happens to be the only compatible donor nearby. He reluctantly gives of his own blood, resulting in the trademark transformation that will change Jennifer's life forever.
I have to say, this choice even shocked me. Though, I took a second look, and the idea seemed less far-fetched. Beyoncé has a biracial heritage, for one, so playing the cousin to Mark Ruffalo's character doesn't seem so out of left field. Not to mention, people most often look at the superstar in the light of sexuality, but such a role as this would allow her to embrace a more bright, bold and comedic side.
So, what do you think? Are you interested in Marvel potentially casting Beyoncé as a superhero? Or would you rather she stay away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let us know in the poll and comments below!
