(Note, very mild Avengers: Age of Ultron SPOILERS are to be found below - along with possible ones for Captain America: Civil War)
In a franchise with a surprisingly large number of laugh-out-loud moments, there have been few more hilarious than Avengers: Age of Ultron's depiction of the Avengers' attempts to lift Thor's hammer. It was also, though, a surprisingly revealing - and potentially important - moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After all, not only did it show us exactly how willing Tony Stark is to cut corners with things that matter (because, c'mon, Tony, getting Rhodey to help isn't cool), but it also showed us something incredibly important about Captain America...
Cap Couldn't Lift Thor's Hammer...Yet
Now, there's a whole lot more about exactly why Cap couldn't lift Thor's hammer right here, but the general gist of it is that he's almost, but not quite worthy, due to his apparent love of war and fighting.
If the latest rumor from the set of Captain America: Civil War is accurate, though, that may well not stay the same for long. Y'see:
It Seems Cap May Lift Thor's Hammer in Civil War
A member of the SuperheroHype message board, Charleswelch, recently claimed that he managed to make his way onto the Captain America: Civil War set - and what he reportedly saw there could prove game-changing for Cap.
Specifically, while apparently on the Atlanta Civic Center based set, which was doubling up as an Institute for Infectious Disease...
...the intrepid poster seemingly spotted two incredibly revealing stunts:
"I calmly walked over to the area with the monitors and sat back to watch an awesome stunt where CA jumps onto the roof of the Civic Center (a good 30 foot leap).
In the lead up to which:
"I noticed while they were preparing for the stunt, was Captain America waving around a CGI stand-in prop that was shaped like a double sided hammer."
Which, if true, seems to suggest that Cap is set to gain the use of Thor's hammer in Civil War. After all, how else would Cap be able to leap 30 feet - after swinging a CGI hammer?
Could This Be for Real, Though?
Well, on the one hand, there're certainly enough comic book examples of Cap wielding Thor's hammer to make it an entirely plausible plot twist - especially since it could very much be seen to have been set up as a possibility in Age of Ultron.
On the flip side, with the rumor originating in a fan's message board post, this one necessarily has to be taken with a decently sized pile of salt - especially considering the fact that Thor: Ragnarok (after which Thor's hammer could very plausibly be in need of a new owner) isn't set for release until 2017.
That being said, it sure would be neat to see...
What do you reckon, though?
