Jurassic World did it! It proudly trod the old territory that Jurassic Park so brilliantly laid out in the 90s, and no one seemed to complain! At least their wallets didn't! Where can the series go next without exhausting its own material? More importantly, what's in store for new box office favorite, Chris Pratt?
Jurassic World introduced us the infallible character of Owen Grady, played by hope for tubby men incarnate, Chris Pratt. Universal seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket with their promotion of Pratt's Owen Grady. Despite Bryce Dallas Howard's character being a clearer protagonist in Jurassic World, it's Grady who adorns the posters and generally embodies the unattainable perfect manliness that will likely be carried over into sequels.
Jurassic World 2 will likely adopt the classic Jurassic Park tradition of simply having characters return to the island. Chris Pratt is the likely contender to star return in this sequel (I mean did you see those box office results?) but I'm concerned that his character doesn't have the motivation to spur him on for a sequel. He's essentially a mash up of Muldoon and Ian Malcolm from the first movie, but aside from that, Owen Grady is just a good guy who doesn't approve of genetic hybrid dinosaurs. Thanks to a trusty mosasaurus, those are all gone, so what reason could this guy really have for returning to Isla Nubar in Jurassic World 2?
It always amuses me when characters in Jurassic Park refuse to go back to the park, before getting paid the appropriate sum and completely abandoning their principles. Sam Neil and Jeff Goldblum in the second and third movies both fall for this, and it seems to parallel the process of getting actors on board. "I won't do Jurassic Park 6! I'm an actor, and won't be remembered only for running away from velocer- wait how big is that pay check?"
Jurassic World 2 could well retread The Lost World or Jurassic Park 3, having Chris Pratt's Owen Grady make another expedition to Isla Nublar on a special mission with a particularly high salary. I wouldn't mind him suddenly being constructed as a sell-out! At least it would be something!
Hate on Jurassic Park 3 all you want, but at least it introduced something interesting to preset plot elements. The initial story begins with a boy parasailing over the island for extreme thrills, only for him to get stranded at the bottom of the food chain. It's just the start of the movie, but what if it was made the focus in Jurassic World 2? Chris Pratt could voluntarily go on some extreme safari run to see the dinosaurs he once cared for. Better yet, he could be the one taking others on these extreme tours. He's out of the job after Jurassic World, and it figures that he would look to make money on the side. This complicates his role as the infallible all American hero of the first movie!
A Rescue Mission
This element would be riffing a little on Jurassic Park 2 and 3, but hey it's not like Jurassic World had any problems with regressing to the plot points and imagery of the originals! I would be up for a plot involving Owen Grady setting out to rescue someone from Isla Nublar in Jurassic World 2, providing it didn't involve a character like Claire being completely damselled (impractical heels and all). Grady's beloved Beta raptor, Blue is still on the island! I'd peg that as a stupid idea for a movie, but then again, Jurassic World gave us Michael Bay-esque running shots for that raptor, so it's not like we're operating within the pantheon of seriousness anymore.
