Not too long ago it was announced that Peter Parker aka Spider-Man will officially be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and tonnes of rumors have floated around the web as to who to the web slinger will be played by.

Sony and Marvel have now found their star. Tom Holland (The Impossible) will be playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Holland has been rumored for a while now but always making the headlines was Asa Butterfield (Hugo). Whilst I'm not completely on board with Marvel/Sony going so young with this version of Spider-Man, I am pleased with the choice of Holland, he showed of some talent in The Impossible and I think he fits the role of Spidey quite well.

Directing the film will be Jon Watts (Cop Car), unfortunately I haven't seen any of Watts' work but Marvel are good at recognizing good directing talent from small backgrounds such as Alan Taylor, James Gunn, Joss Whedon and the Russo Bros.

Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said the following:

“It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige commented:

“As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Amy Pascal of Sony said:

“Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

The first Spider-Man solo film set in the MCU will release on July 28th 2017 but we may first see the web-head in early 2016 in a small role in Captain America: Civil War.
