Even though celebrities lead busy lives surrounded by adoring fans, that doesn't mean that they don't need some companionship and unconditional loving from a non-human source.
These actors and actresses might be praised for their talent, but we should also be highlighting what makes them good people as soon as they walk off the set, too. So here are 11 famous families that were made all the better with the addition of an adopted pet:
1. Ryan Gosling - George
Ryan Gosling lovingly describes his adopted friend George as "the great love of my life." The two appear to do everything together, including talk shows!
2. Kaley Cuoco - Norman, Shirley and Ruby
Kaley Cuoco and her husband, Ryan Sweeting, are both animal rights activists and have opened up their homes and hearts to three sweet dogs, Norman, Shirley, and most recently, Ruby.
3. Ryan Reynolds - Baxter
I saw this big, dumb-looking retriever staring up at me. I whispered to him, 'Hey, let's get the hell out of here.' And he jumped up, like he spoke English fluently. He came with me, he jumped in the car, and we've been best buddies ever since.
I just fell in love with him. I didn't mean to, I just picked him up along the way.
4. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
The young couple, who reportedly reconciled in the last few weeks, initially fostered their golden retriever named Ren from L.A. Rescue back in 2012, before making it official and adopting the two-year-old pup.
5. Bradley Cooper - Samson and Charlotte
Cooper adopted Samson from a kill shelter a few weeks before he was scheduled to be euthanized. Samson lived happily for 13 years before passing away in 2010. Cooper then adopted Charlotte from an adoption drive in Santa Monica. When it comes to his dogs, not even a woman could stand in the way. He told People Pets:
She has to like my dogs. My dogs and I come in a package.
6. Jake Gyllenhaal - Boo Radley, Atticus and Leo
Gyllenhaal is the owner of three adorable rescue pets: Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and Leo. The actor has said that the best thing that came from Brokeback Mountain wasn't his Oscar nomination, but that riding horses for the film brought him closer to animals:
The best thing that I got out of it was...a dog out. I started riding and I had always wanted to a get a dog and I just thought, "Well, maybe it's time to get a dog."
I've had an interesting relationship to animals growing up; kind of a distant one. It was a real opportunity to get close to animals, you know, horses, and dogs, and sheep, and I took it on. For a city boy to be riding a horse, it was great. My dog has changed my life and since then my sister has two cats, my parents have three cats and I have two dogs. Literally since this movie.
7. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard - Lola and Mr. Shakes
It's a well-known fact that Kristen Bell loves sloths, but she's also a puppy lover. Both dogs were rescues. Lola was given up by her family and Bell simply fell in love. Mr. Shakes was on the euthanasia list, and Bell decided Lola needed a friend. Hear more about their adorable adoption story here:
8. Orlando Bloom - Sidi
Bloom rescued his best friend Sidi while on location filming Kingdom of Heaven in Morocco back in 2004. It's clear from the video below that the two are inseparable.
9. Josh Hutcherson - Driver
In 2012, the Hunger Games actor adopted a little pit bull puppy, which he named Driver, from the Hands Paws Hearts rescue group. Driver was dropped off as a stray and has two toes, but Hutcherson was smitten with the puppy as soon as he saw him.
10. Amanda Seyfried - Finn
Amanda Seyfried's love - or mild obsession - with her Australian Shepherd Finn is one of the most adorable relationships to grace our Instagram feeds. The two even make videos documenting their hilarious relationship together:
10. Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed
The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder and Twilight's Nikki Reed are known for being vampires, but even more importantly, the two are huge animal rights activists. The newlyweds show no sign of slowing down on their ever-growing animal family.
The pair have adopted two cats and a horse since they've been together, adding to their already large pet family. Somerhalder has a dog, Nietzsche, with his ex-girlfriend and TVD co-star Nina Dobrev. Reed also has two canine friends of her own, Enzo and Ira, as well as a pet rat. And those are just the ones we could count!
Since they can't adopt all of the homeless animals in the world - despite their best efforts - they both use their fame to help to end breed specific legislation and promote the adoption of rescued animals on their social media accounts.
Like these celebrities, we encourage anyone who can to adopt pets from rescue shelters. Not only will you be giving them a loving home and possibly saving a life, but it will also give you one more topic to discuss when you (inevitably) meet Ryan Gosling!
