I was surprised to see that The Coalition actually unveiled some gameplay for the upcoming Gears of War 4 at E3 this year. However, they really couldn't have picked a darker level. The lighting was certainly impressive in the trailer, but I was frustrated by how obscured a great deal of the environments were. That being said though, it looks like Gears of War 4 will be returning to its more horror-focused roots, rather than focusing on insane over-the-top action. Tone is far more important for Rod Fergusson.

However, while tone is certainly vital to the game's success, Gears of War 4 is going to have to find a way to follow up on the badassery of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. These two characters were massive factors which contributed to Gears of War's success. And to be honest, after seeing the E3 gameplay trailer, I don't know if this new protagonist can live up to their legacy.

What Do You Think of Gears of War 4 & its New Characters in Comparison to Dom & Marcus?

The Gears of War series was as much about friendships and brotherhood as it was killing Locust. The exchanges between all of its characters were fantastically written - if not a bit cheezy. These people felt like the toughest beings to grace the planet, and when Dom and Marcus were joined alongside the likes of Cole Train, shit got real! It's a key element of the Gears franchise and we all hope that The Coalition can dream up some equally fascinating characters.

However, once the apparent protagonist of Gears of War 4 literally stepped into the light, I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed. Also, the female character that accompanied him was basically nowhere in sight. Go figure. I'm so tired of the cliche-ridden characters that Video Games spew out on a regular basis. And if Gears of War 4 continues along the trend that the E3 gameplay trailer displayed, it looks like we'll have another guy to add to the list.

Now, I know that the trailer was only 7 minutes in length - we got very little time with the characters that The Coalition had on display. But it seems that Microsoft have just gone and picked another nice-voiced, American white guy to take the helm. I mean, the voice acting of Marcus Fenix just oozed intimidation. It was indicative of the harsh life the man has lead and the grizzly fights he assuredly went through.

The guy in the trailer reminded me of Baird, but with less of a personality. Perhaps Gears of War 4 will have a mechanic whereby we can actually pick who we want to play as in a squad. Maybe this sequence was similar to what we've seen in the past. Perhaps the two we saw in the trailer were simply half of a team of four who've split up to take down two different objectives.

What Did You Think of the E3 Gameplay Trailer?

If that's the case, their may be hope for this guy yet. But as it stands, Gears of War 4 doesn't have me excited to play as this handsome white guy who looks like he's never seen a day of combat in his life. Though with these new kinds of monsters, I wonder how infected the world of Gears really is in this new XBOX One exclusive.

But what do you think Gears of War fans? Are these new characters underwhelming for you when compared with Marcus and Dom? Is there still hope for the new lead that The Coalition showed off in the E3 gameplay trailer? Let us know in the comments below!
