The Last Guardian. What a way to start an E3 conference - and Fumito Ueda was in attendance! Awesome stuff. The Last Guardian has been among names like Fallout 4 and Half-Life 3 for a long time. But thankfully, along with Bethesda's much anticipated return, this E3 gifted us another look at Team Ico's creation. Assumedly the game will now be released for the PS4, with the PS3 version having become a thing of the past.
But what can we really expect from a game that's been around for as long as The Last Guardian has? It hasn't undergone a massive design change from what we saw at E3, therefore it's difficult to imagine what exactly has kept this game in development hell. Maybe it'll be massive! But there's one thing that seems certain: Team Ico are blending both the worlds of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for The Last Guardian!
The Last Guardian on PS4 - Fumito Ueda's Blending of Ico & Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus is still probably my favourite game of all time. Few games have been able to create boss battles that equal the intensity of Ueda's 2005 masterpiece and no game has equalled that sense of scale. Climbing up the legs of some of these creatures is still exhilarating and the battle against the Desert Dragon is one of the finest moments in gaming. But of course, some prefer the emotional journey of Ico to that of SotC.
Ico's puzzles are beautifully designed and often quite challenging. It's a touching journey of love and friendship and it seems that The Last Guardian has Ico on its mind. The dog-like creature seen in the trailers appears to be a way in which we can complete puzzles. He's similar to poor Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, in that he'll help us to move around. But our beloved horse was never really involved in puzzles, just intense combat scenarios.
Do You Prefer Shadow of the Colossus or Ico?
Therefore, I wonder whether Team Ico will be incorporating crazy boss battles into The Last Guardian. The size of our new friend is certainly a reminder of the scale of Shadow of the Colossus, therefore we may be up for some amazing battles while clinging onto his back. Just imagine the situations the team could conjure up! Or maybe it's just a puzzle-solving game. Only time will tell!
In any case, it's delightful to know that The Last Guardian is alive and well, with a 2016 release date! But which game from Team Ico do you most want it to resemble? Do you prefer Ico to Shadow of the Colossus and how excited are you to get your hands on this game? Let us know in the comments below!
