We all know who Walt Disney is but most people do not know how Mr. Disney started. You probably watch a lot of Disney movies and I think you should learn all about it.

Walt Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901and he was brought up on a farm. Walt attended the McKinley High School in Chicago, he showed a lot of interest in drawing at that time already.

Walt enjoyed watching movies, his favourite movies where films starring Charlie Chaplin. Walt knew that he wanted to work in the film industry, he thought that he would maybe become an actor but he was not sure. He always wanted to join the U.S. Army but he was rejected because he was too young. He managed to join the Red Cross as an ambulance driver until the end of World War I. During his time in the war he started smoking which was a habit he kept through out his entire life. When he came back from the war he learned about animated features, he was immediately interested. When he moved to Kansas city, he produced his animated feature with his friend, Ub Iwerks, at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Walt started his first business venture but it quickly failed. He decided to move to Hollywood, in August 1923. In Hollywood he set up a studio with his brother, Roy. Walt and Roy made a few features that proved unsuccessful but then they made what they called an "Alice Comedy".

The Alice Comedy's became successful for a while. Walt and Roy had started in their uncle's garage and with the money from The Alice Comedy's they managed to move into a room on the opposite street and they managed to hire some employee's. Walt fell in love with one of his employee's, Lillian Bounds, he married her in 1925, they had two children later, Diane Marie and Sharon Mae. The technology to add sound had not been applied to animated features, Walt and Roy decided to try and put sound into there features and it worked very well. Walt wanted to make a special character, he had decided to make it a mouse, he told his wife he thought of calling it "Mortimer" and she replied by saying he should be called "Mickey". Disney had a massive breakthrough when he made his character "Mickey Mouse", Walt voiced the character himself. The feature "Steamboat Willie" was a very successful and Disney had a massive string of success after that. Walt made a huge gamble by making the first fully animated feature "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" in 1937.

Walt Disney actually managed to get a special Academy Award for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Walt created a bunch of spinoff characters to go with Mickey like Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. Walt made more films that where success in America but it did not make a lot of money in the other areas around the globe because of World War II. After the war Disney started making live action films mixed with animation like Song Of The South. Walt became extremely rich a few years later and started thinking about making a theme park, he decided to make Disneyland which took many years and a lot of effort. In 1966, Walt Disney was diagnosed with lung cancer after many years of smoking. He ended up dying on the 15th of December 1966. During his time alive Disney made 81films and won a record 32 Academy Awards. It took many years for the Disney company to get confident but in the 80s they managed to get their stride. Now Disney is a multinational company with A LOT OF MONEY. Walt Disney is now considered the pioneer of animation.
