(Warning - there are possible SPOILERS for the future of the MCU, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in particular, to be found below. Or, if the theory expounded there is incorrect, there aren't any at all. Read on at your own risk (or no risk at all)!)
Now, Guardians of the Galaxy may have hit theaters almost a year ago now, but that doesn't mean that our with Star-Lord and his gang of adorable criminals has in any way abated. What's more, there are still a couple of mysterious plot-threads that the movie left dangling still to be solved - and one in particular that it's hard to just up and forget about.
We Still Don't Know Who Star-Lord's Father is...
Now, we know that he's an alien - and, from Peter Quill's ability to survive in the vacuum of space, and to not be horribly destroyed by touching an Infinity Stone, we can assume he's incredibly powerful - but that's about all we have to go on when it comes to guessing just who Star-Lord's poppa is...other than that it definitely isn't who it is in the comics:
That being said, though, Guardians of the Galaxy's director James Gunn has previously revealed that he worked out exactly who Star-Lord's dad is before shooting the first movie, so it's actually entirely possible that Gunn slipped in a subtle reference or two that will, in retrospect, tie the sequel's reveal of his identity to the original.
And, wouldn't you know it:
There's a Pretty Solid Fan Theory About Just Who It Is...and Where We Saw Them in Guardians of the Galaxy
That Star-Lord has already stood more-or-less right next to his dad, without either of them ever realizing it.
His Dad Was in This Here Cocoon the Whole Time
Yup. That's right. The guy in the cocoon might just be Star-Lord's dad - which means that we know exactly who that (almost certainly) is: Adam Warlock.
Otherwise known as the most important hero in Marvel's comic-book Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War crossovers, which look likely to form the vast basis of Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 & 2.
Now, in the comics, Adam Warlock is very much not Peter Quill's pops, but instead an artificially created 'perfect human' who was eventually granted god-like powers.
Now, the logic behind Adam Warlock being Star-Lord's dad is three-pronged.
1. He's going to be important to Avengers: Infinity War, so he almost certainly has to turn up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 anyway.
2. There's likely a limit to how many random new characters James Gunn and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige want to add into the MCU mix, so making an otherwise integral character into Star-Lord's dad would simplify - and streamline - things a lot, especially going into Avengers: Infinity War.
3. Adam Warlock is both powerful enough to have enabled his son to survive the sorts of terrible stuff we watched Star-Lord handle like a champ, and distinctly available to appear. After all, at the end of Guardians, a whole bunch of eagle-eyed fans spotted this:
Otherwise known as what looks exactly like that same cocoon, only broken.
Which, it seems, suggests that Adam Warlock could well be stomping around the galaxy...just in time, perhaps, to run into his son...
Now, that being said, James Gunn has previously suggested that he just threw that cocoon in as a throwaway gag, and didn't really think about its connotations...but y'know what? I'm not sure anyone's actually buying that.
The big question, though?
What do you think?
Will Adam Warlock turn out to be Star-Lord's father?
