It's been nearly twenty years since the first Independence Day was released in theaters. We all enjoyed watching Will Smith portray Captains Steven Hiller, with his badass attitude and hilarious one-liners.
We are sad to report, however, that Will Smith will not be returning to the series in Independence Day 2: Resurgence to help kick some massive alien butt. According to Roland Emmerich:
"Well, you know, like near the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was very excited to be in it, but then after a while, you know, he just was tired of sequels and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out."
Emmerich didn't let that hold him back. A couple of his friends encouraged him to still move forward with the franchise, and three years later, Emmerich feels he was able to create something new with a little nod to Will Smith in this modern story.
Usher, a newcomer to the cast, will be playing the role of a grown up Dylan Dubrow, Jasmine Dubrow's son and Steven Hiller's stepson.
How was he cast, you may ask? It actually happened in a very unique way. Usher describes how the chance to portray Dylan came about:
“Long time ago, the agent who is representing me now, Ken Stovitz, was Will Smith’s agent and he was with him throughout the process, the first Independence Day and a lot of projects that he did way back when, and then they left to do other things. Anyways, jump to now, I’m signed with Ken for about a year and a half, and that’s right around the time, maybe a little later, that I met Harold who’s sitting here in the front row at the gym. We had the same trainer. He did a session and then I would come into the gym right after him so I kind of met him in passing, and then I heard through the trainer and then from Harold that he was soon to be working on Independence Day 2 and, you know, of course that was exciting news for me. I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh! Will Smith’s my career idol,’ this and that. ‘Can you put me in the movie?’ They’re like, ’Of course.’ It was like a little joke sort of and then cut to now and it’s not so much of a joke anymore. Thank you Harold. Thank you Roland.”
When Usher's agent received the call from Fox letting him know that Usher had been cast in Independence 2, Will Smith was visiting his agency and happened to be in the office at that exact moment.
Wow. This has to be fate. I can't wait to see what Usher brings to the table, and I am sure he will have the same fierce attitude that Captain Hiller possessed.
Returning Cast Members
Even though Will Smith is skipping out on the sequel, many original actors from the cast are returning. This includes:
Vivica A. Fox
Hopefully this makes up for Will's absence. What do you think?
Are You Excited Now?!
This film will be released June of 2016, so we are going to have to pretend to be patient for an entire year. For now, we will have to make do with updates, interviews, and behind-the-scenes sneak peaks while we calmly await for 2016 to slowly arrive.
Wow. It really does feel like the return of the '90s.
