[Marvel's Agent Carter](tag:1119765) was an instant hit with fans, pushing the already popular Peggy to hero status. It was also a pleasant genre shift: while The Avengers movies and [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](tag:722469) take place in the present, Agent Carter is a retro spy caper, featuring all kinds of fun 40s gadgets and gorgeous vintage cars. However, for a show set in the past, Agent Carter wowed fans with its fairly progressive plots about equality and acceptance, as Peggy struggles to be appreciated as an agent.
So much for season 1. With season 2 now confirmed and shooting, rumours are flying about what we can expect for the show next year. ABC recently released a brief synopsis, teasing fans with tantalising hints.
Dedicated to the fight against new atomic age threats in the wake of World War II, Peggy must now journey from New York City to Los Angeles for her most dangerous assignment yet. But even as she discovers new friends, a new home — and perhaps even a new love — she’s about to find out that the bright lights of the post-war Hollywood mask a more sinister threat to everyone she is sworn to protect.
It seems Peggy's gonna have a lot to deal with, but at least she has a smiling face to come home to every night, as Angie Cartinelli (uh, Martinelli) is now her roomie. And with Hayley Atwell pushing for a female love interest, it seems very possible these gals might be more than just pals...
But what about the husband?
In [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](tag:254973) we snatched a glance at an older Peggy, as Steve Rogers watched some news footage of his old flame. The whole sequence was tearjerking, with Peggy mentioning that Steve introduced her to "the man who would eventually become my husband." But while it seems pretty set in stone that she will marry a man, she's still got many years ahead of her and many wild oats to sow!
Back in February, executive producer Tara Butters reported that the writers were trying to avoid the "who is Peggy's husband" plot, focusing instead on Peggy's career and development as a person. The writers definitely want to do something different with Carter: who could forget that kiss with Dottie in season 1! So how likely is it that we'll see Peggy step out with a lady next year?
Hayley Atwell seems determined to put this idea in fans' heads. In her interview with YahooTV, the Captain America star expressed her desire for Pegs to stop pining over her lost love. How could anyone measure up to the America Adonis that is Steve Rogers? Yup, you guessed it! Atwell's suggestion is to think out of the box completely: with Peggy courting a ladylove, comparisons to Captain America will go out the window!
Who's the lucky lady?
After the epic showdown that saw these two badass women try to kill each other, it's not likely Dottie and Peggy will be snuggling up by the fireplace any time soon. If we do see some kind of romantic angle in Dottie's plotline it'll probably be more along the lines of obsession. She did, after all, have a bit of a shrine to Peggy in season 1. With her traumatic childhood, Dottie might have a fixation on the super spy: Agent Carter is everything Dottie is trying to emulate, and yet also her sworn enemy. A real relationship, would probably veer on the unhealthy side but who knows, maybe as Dottie becomes Peggy's nemesis, true feelings will be revealed...
Of course the biggest contender for Agent Carter's heart is Angie Martinelli. Their relationship acted as a poignant foil to Peggy's spy life, as she had to keep her secret identity, well, secret. In this way Angie has already taken the role usually inhabited by the hero's love interest: how many times did Clark have to hide his red-caped antics from Lois? After a season's worth of relationship development, with the two ladies defending and protecting each other again and again, the finale saw them move into Stark's mansion together. Where could this possibly lead? (So remember those fireplace cuddles I mentioned earlier...)
This is definitely something the fans want to see. From the beginning of the show, the chemistry between actresses Hayley Atwell and Lyndsy Fonesca had sparks flying off the screen. The internet is begging for the two to get together, but until season 2 is released, at least we can be content with beautiful fanart!
Ok, but will it really happen?
It's... possible. Track for Peggy and Angie has definitely been laid, and Peggy's kissed a girl (probably not liked it though, she did fall unconscious). What remains to be seen is whether the writers, and ABC, want to go full-blown lesbian relationship or just tempt the fans with the possibility. And we can't forget Daniel Sousa: Peggy's cute fellow agent who seems smitten with our ass-kicking heroine. After finally working up the courage to ask Peggy out, he got a "try again later" response, so maybe we'll see this develop into a relationship in season 2. Which would no doubt be adorable.
So what do you think? Should Agent Carter break new ground and date a lady? For now, all we can do is speculate on Peggy's romantic future until season 2 gives us the answers. And however this situation plays out, we can still sit back, relax, and watch as Peggy punches her way to victory.
