I've been reading comics for a couple of ...well decades now, so I have seen a decent amount of things happen. In fact with how long some of these characters have been around, I can tell you for certain, the status quo tends to change all the time. Enemies became friends, friends became lovers, lovers become enemies, sidekicks become heroes, heroes became villains, ducks bang Lea Thompson. The wheel keeps spinning.
The point I'm trying to make is a lot of stuff has gone down. Some of it good, some of it bad, and some of it is really weird (Howard I'm looking at you.) Now with the way comics work it's no surprise that people who once tried to kill each other can become allies, the very reason they were enemies in the first place is usually common ground that they had a different view on.(Dr.doom and Mr. fantastic have science, Professor X and Magneto had mutants, Wolverine and Sabertooth have stabbing people, etc.) that being said there are just as many examples of friends and allies falling out of favor with each other over how to or how was a situation was handled. ( Captain America and Iron man in civil war, Wolverine and Cyclopes in schism, Hell the avengers and x-men in...Avengers Vs. X-men... guess they ran out of clever titles by that point.) These usually end up being resolved years later.
Well I'm not talking about those!!!! This series focuses on the people who have stayed friends, lovers, and allies through thick and thin, even when it was clear that one of then is a huge dick to the other when ever they had the chance. Just the worst person.
Now I'm sure you notice I'm starting out with(It was in the title) and you might be wondering "Jean grey? but she is the nicest person in comics!" Well I didn't say Jean grey Dumb ass I said Phoenix ! ( I may have to add my name to this list.) Now this one is complicated since we are really talking about the Phoenix Force, but because of how it changes with each person the effects are a bit different. So the nature of the Phoenix is less of a person and more of a possession. Should I have started with an character that was easy to understand to get the ball rolling? Would that have made my life and your journey easier? Yes, But I'm a impulse kind of a guy and if I'm going in I'm swinging for the fences!
Now like I said this one is kinda complicated, So lets start with a definition of are subject and then it's humble beginnings(can a cosmic force of destruction be humble?):
The Phoenix Force is an immortal and mutable manifestation of the prime universal force of life and passion. Born of the void between states of being, the Phoenix Force is a child of the universe.
So yeah pretty humble. That's pretty impressive-
It is the nexus of all psionic energy which does, has, and ever will exist in all realities of the multiverse, the Guardian of Creation, and of the dangerously powerful M'Kraan Crystal.
Wow that's alot-
The Phoenix is among the most feared beings in all of existence — having the power to cut and re-grow any part of the universe, as well as destroy it entirely, which is part of the Phoenix' purpose: "The Judgment of the Phoenix", to burn away the obsolete.
OK I think we get it-
The Phoenix Force is described as being "the embodiment of the very passion of Creation – the spark that gave life to the Universe, the flame that will ultimately consume it."
Now to me The phoenix force is like a drug. It makes you feel great, but eventually it starts to change you. Only problem is it's the only drug that comes looking for you! Example #1: Jean grey.
Jean first appeared as Marvel Girl in X-Men #1 (September 1963). The original team's sole female member, Marvel Girl was a regular part of the team through the series' publication. Initially possessing the ability of telekinesis, the character was later granted the power of telepathy. She was for years considered the weakest member of the team and this was a team that angel was on...angel who could fly and... that's it... just fly... with wings... Big ones that flapped and everything. Hell she had more powers than Professor X (two to one) and he was still running laps around her and he was in a wheel chair(most of the time.). she spent most of the time as the damsel in distress or their Secretary. don't believe me? Look up Uncanny X-Men #35 where they run into spider-man and have a classic hero-misunderstanding- spider-man-vs-X-men-Battle. well jean is told to stay behind and man the phone lines, while the guys get there ass handed to them by spidey.
Now you didn't come here to read sexism in comics back in the day, you came to find out why jean grey was a bad friend back in the day. AND I WILL TELL WHY! It has to due with with a very popular time in X-men comics when they were fighting the Hell fire club in what is probably their best appearance ever. Which is funny since it's a prologue to a even better story line. Their finest moment is a prequel.
Now This started as a side story where Mastermind sought to use his mutant powers as well as artificial means to psionically alter her personality . The Inner Circle hoped she would willingly become the Inner Circle's new Black Queen. Mastermind was slowly manipulating Jean grey by making her believe she was reliving the past life of one of her ancestors(Which I guess is cool. Who doesn't want to remember when we didn't have indoor plumbing?)He made her believe it was the late 1800s and she was British noblewoman Jean Grey, on a ship headed for America with her lover Jason Wyngarde. She even sees the X-Men as people from that time period as well.
Now this is all well and good until you think what time period she was romanticizing :1800s in America. If you guessing what happen around that time you are right: The Louisiana Purchase and nothing else! oh wait ... I'm looking at a footnote here says a few others things have happen. let's see... mark twain... alamo...lewis and clark...oh and Slavery! well if your still full force team jean. you are probably thinking jean's family was probably northerners who were against this. well lets see what happens when jean gets turn evil and is full on living in the illusion of being in the past:
Well at least she isn't violent.
How exactly do you stay friends after that? "hey remember that time I bitch slapped you with a whip cause I thought I owned you? Crazy times." Luckily (for jean she died not to soon after but not before changing a landmark in the universe:
That's right she eat a star! One this planet was using as their sun. Now they have use to night vision googles all the time, and never get a tan. Not to mention how this will jack up the time zones! this is the worst thing that ever happen to them! theres no way this could get worst! No way no how, this is-
.... ....Oh...Well... That is worst...
I know people who don't like talking bout relatives who are in jail for robbery, how do you bring jean after this?
"Sigh' Remember the time Jean- "
"Killed billions of people? yeah shut the fuck up"
I know what you want to say. "It's not her fault it was the force." ( Sorry Lucus films, Phoenix force) Yeah but don't forget this the first time any of the x-man had to deal with something like this. To them she is basically a friend who lost it. sure it was explained that it was out of her control, but that doesn't take away the feelings they felt when it happen. Just knowing that someone is capable of horrible things under any influence changes how you feel about them. unless your wolverine or cyclopes, who both have a half way decent excuse to be on the jean team. Thanks to jean a special 'psychic bond' between herself and Cyclops was made, so they could always contact each other. It also let them have a stronger connection and link to each others feelings. So he probably felt so of what was making her crazy and understood. Now wolverine is just a messed up guy. life has been crap and he cant possible see things in the best light. That being said lets look at why Phoenix has ruined him for life:
New X-Men #148 she and Wolverine were on an asteroid headed for the sun. They have tried everything, but it does not look like they will make it out of there alive. Wolverine does what he feels is the honorable thing and kills Jean before they are vaporized…
Tragic. At least it's over and we can move on- What? It's not over? the Phoenix force brings Jean Grey back in Phoenix: Endsong?
Twice? how unfortunate. Well noe the healing can begi-
Ok that seems like a lot. Maybe we can-
...That is mess up.
Luckily the worst thing that happen from the next host of the Phoenix Forceis style:
Yikes. Yeah most of the time rachel summers was a fairley decent host. world-eating-slave-making issues. She did end up with with wolverine inside her...
Now before I go I should mention another few people who were host:
Now I could explain to crappy things this group did while under the influence( Murders in wakanda,Hell in a volcano, stealing Nightwings look.) but they were kinda acting like jerks BEFORE that had it so I'm not gonna blame this on PF.
Well that's it for now until next time, take a good look at your friends, that might have been asshole the whole time and you didn't know it.
