The future is now folks, no going back to fix your new years resolutions for last year, time doesn't work that way i'm afraid. Speaking of being afraid, i've picked 5 New Year Horror Movies that are sure to scare the crap out of you... and not necessarily in the way you'd expect.
So read on and discover a batch of films that give the ultimate meaning to CULT MOVIES.
5. NEW YEARS EVIL (1980)
A movie that continues to be viewed each and every year by cult audiences hankering for some seasonal horror. I'm pretty sure that's its ONLY lasting legacy to cinema though.
"During a New Year's Eve celebration, a Punk Rock & New Wave show host gets a phone call saying that when New Year's strikes in each time zone, someone will be murdered--and she will be the last one."
Not one of the more memorable Slashers to crop out of the '80s, but it was quick to jump on the band wagon that started with Friday the 13th and ended with such unlikely titles as April Fools Day (1986) and Graduation Day (1981).
See my video review for more on this slice of cheesy slasher.
4. END OF DAYS (1999)
Arnie's big comeback movie of '99, saw him pit his wits against Satan in a horror movie drenched in fear of the New Year. This was particularly rich as everyone was worried about the whole Y2K thing, but 17 years later the computers haven't stopped working and we're all slave to machines so YAY! (I think).
Here's the plot in a nutshell
At the end of the century, Satan visits New York in search of a bride. It's up to an ex-cop who now runs an elite security outfit to stop him.
3. ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968)
A classic movie here from Roman Polanski that has just received a new incarnation on TV (not so sure about that myself).
This is partially set at the start of a new year so is included in the list, plus it's one of the most atmospheric horror movies i've ever had the fortune to see.
A young couple move into an apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.
Genuinely unusual and creepy, it's a must see for any fan of Horror or a student of cinema.
2. THE SIGNAL (2007)
Kinda makes it into the list for being a strange cult movie and of course is set around New Years.
This low budget horror prays on our fear of technology (again) and shows society regress to a state of barbaric mindlessness when a rogue signal is sent out via TV and radio.
A horror film told in three parts, from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission that turns people into killers invades every cell phone, radio, and television
As if we don't have enough to be afraid of in general life anyway, quite chilling in parts and also echoes the plot to Stephen King's CELL which is a movie coming out with Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack, this year I believe.
1. BLOODY NEW YEAR (1980)
Making it to the number one spot for being one of the most unusual and strange B-Flicks i've ever had the (mis)fortune of seeing.
Technically the film's set in June but revolves around a time warp plot involving a New years Eve party at a hotel in 1960.
Here's the plot:
Five shipwrecked English teenagers take refuge in an island hotel that is decorated for New Years. The problem is, it's early summer, and soon enough, even the walls themselves are striking out against them..
There's so much bonkers material in this film and I want YOU to hear about it from my own lips, watch the video below for my view of the film. Plus i've included a ton of footage from the movie... some of the more hilarious scenes shall I say!
So thats all, hope you've enjoyed my countdown of "interesting" New Years Horror movies to watch in 2016. Hopefully you'll seek them out and watch with a group of friends.
