I decided to watch The Maze Runner which was a decently reviewed film that came out last year and was one that I never bothered to check out. The Maze Runner centers on a character named Thomas who is thrust into the middle of a maze with no memory of who he is or why he is there, he encounters a society made of teenage boys who have been living in the maze for 3 years and have not found an escape; so it is up to Thomas to find it. The Maze Runner stars Dylan O'Brien, Aml Ameen, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario.
There are a few positives to this film, which are: the acting is generally quite good, the plot progression is great, the action is good, tension is built well and there is a lot of intrigue. The acting in the leads is pretty good, the male lead (Dylan O'Brien) gives a convincing performance and I especially liked Will Poulter in his role. The action in this film is fun to watch and filled with tension as characters are killed quite easily which made me fear for the other characters' lives. I would say that this film is built on its intriguing plot as it has a lot of unanswered questions at the start of the film, which slowly get revealed in a way that still makes the film interesting as it progresses.
There are also a few negatives that I found in this film which are that the acting from a couple of people is not very good and the ending is a bit disappointing. The female lead (Kaya Scodelario) had a completely flat and unconvincing performance, even though her role was small it bothered me whenever she had a scene. The other negative is the ending because as I said this film is built on the intrigue and when the answers are finally revealed they aren't that interesting; then something happens that neglects that part of the plot and leaves more questions unanswered than were answered orginally, thankfully the film made enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel which is releasing this year.
Overall I did enjoy The Maze Runner because of its intriguing plot and fun action however it did have some problems which hindered my enjoyment of it, so taking everything I have said into consideration I rate this film:
