Furious 7 star Tyrese Gibson says he "took the oath," and now just needs the Power Ring to complete his transformation into DC's iconic comic book hero, Green Lantern!
Tyrese's burning desire to suit up in 2020's cinematic reboot has hardly been kept secret, with the enthusiastic actor furiously campaigning for the Green Lantern role these past few months - but has he finally secured it?
Blaming the Fans
It seems Gibson might've made a breakthrough with the studio, blaming all you passionate fans out there for having catapulted him to this privileged position:
"There are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens."
Does that sound like a tentative confirmation to you?
What About Chris Pine?
Earlier this year the word on the street was that Star Trek star Chris Pine was preparing to take on the mantle of the emerald-wielding crusader, so what happened to him?
Well, to make matters even more intriguing/confusing, Tyrese Gibson posted a rather cryptic piece of fan art on his Instagram feed, suggesting that this world might just be big enough for two Green Lanterns after all:
Could we be in for a double dose of Green Lantern action come 2020? I can picture the endless marketing tie-ins with the two heavy release date already.
But seriously, why not? Chris Pine as Hal Jordan and Tyrese Gibson as John Stewart fighting the intergalactic forces of evil under the united banner of the Green Lantern Corps! And I'm not the only one raring to see this happen, Gibson is practically bursting at the latex seams with excitement, too:
"Listen, these muscles are here and they're ready to be used. There are lots of people, domestically and internationally, who've got love with your boy... I'm coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern."
So, Gibson is well and truly in. It seems the aspiring Lantern is just waiting on the green light from the studio execs now. I have a feeling we'll know more next month come Comic-Con. "You never know," Tyrese said. "I might be there on the other side of an announcement. You never know."
