With news breaking of Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal taking up the role of one of Marvel fan's favorite anti-heroes, people have wondered just how big of a role Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, will be playing in season 2 of Netflix's hit, Daredevil. Thanks to a report from Nerdist News, we may just have our answer!

Who is The Punisher?

Originally appearing in The Amazing Spiderman #129 (1974), Frank Castle was a Marine veteran in the Vietnam War (Note: Frank Castle will probably be an Iraq war veteran instead of a Vietnam vet in DD S2). After leaving the military, Castle was on a picnic in New York's Central Park with his wife and children where they all witnessed a mafia execution. His entire family was murdered, leaving him as the only survivor. Although he was able to positively identify the murderers, they were not brought to justice because of their deep ties to the Costa crime family. Deciding that the American justice system could not properly punish criminals, he took up the alter ego of The Punisher and used his military skills to exact revenge on his family's killers, and wage a violent one-man war on crime.

The Punisher has had a long history of crossing paths with other Marvel heroes, but most often with Spiderman and Daredevil.

Punisher vs. Daredevil

Nerdist has reported that a source close to them has confirmed that Season 2 of Daredevil will be called "Daredevil vs. Punisher." The two have a strong history of fighting, due to their oppositions in how criminals should be punished. Season one showed us that Matt Murdock feels that the justice system will do it's job when he (spoiler if you have not yet finished season one) spared Kingpin's life and simply left him in prison, whereas The Punisher believes that death is a more proper punishment for criminals. Oftentimes, Daredevil comes out on top (due in part to Daredevil's superior hand to hand combat skills), leaving The Punisher left beat, or in prison himself.

While I can't say whether or not he will be the main villain, he will definitely be a main antagonist. In my opinion, season two will probably be similar to the story arc from 2006's Daredevil vs Punisher: Means & Ends by David Lapham, where Kingpin is put in prison and The Punisher and Daredevil are left fighting each other whie fighting other villains. There will probably be one main villain who both heroes are after, thus causing them to cross paths. Whichever route the writers decide to take with season two, I'm sure it will be fantastic!
