Avengers star Jeremy Renner is not the first A-Lister to have been questioned about his sexuality, whether in interviews or by the nagging of tabloid suspicion.
He's not even the first to answer those rumors, but his answer is guaranteed to move even the hardest heart. Our beloved Hawkeye spoke candidly with Playboy, gently rocking our world with his good-natured response to being asked about gay rumors.
Firstly, he didn't either confirm or deny them:
"Okay, I’ll speak to this. But as a general rule I don’t respond to questions about my personal life. I’m not going to try to prove what I am or am not. It’s silly, right?"
This is super cool because it takes nerve and character to just be yourself and not G.A.F. what other people think. Very chill, Jeremy - especially considering that ten years ago, Tom Cruise was suing journalists for the very same assertions.
Secondly, he made a joke out of the essentially ridiculous nature of being 'famous':
"When you google yourself and the first thing that comes up is “Jeremy Renner gay,” it’s like, “Oh, now you’ve arrived. You’re now a giant movie star.” So I just had a big laugh about it. I don’t care, ultimately, if that’s what people want to think, read and care about. Fucking say whatever the hell you want about me."
Very true. I'm sure *sarcasm* A-List actors have nothing better to do than sob over their google results all day *end sarcasm*. It's that great sense of humor that keeps Jeremy cool when people laugh at Hawkeye for being the 'worst Avenger,' too.
I mean, come on, he can handle himself in a fight...
Thirdly, and most importantly of all, he's not just thinking about the way these issues affect him. He's chill, he's accepted himself, but he wants people to think about just how damn stupid it is to judge someone negatively purely on the basis of sexuality:
"Look at where we’re at socially—leaps and bounds ahead of where we started. That’s an amazing thing. To suggest that it’s negative, that being gay is a terrible thing, a perversion or whatever—I just don’t get it. Don’t you wish we were in a world where we’re not shaming, judging and boxing people in?"
That, Jeremy, is so damn accurate it's right on target - and we wouldn't expect anything less from Hawkeye.
