As any fan of The Walking Dead knows, Negan is Rick Grimes' arch-nemesis, and all around psychopath . There have been casting rumors buzzing around since we saw Negan's group (The Wolves) in season five, but the role has yet to be cast. Whether or not we see Negan next season is unknown, but we know that he has to show up eventually. Before he does, I would like to name 10 actors who could bring the character to life, and hopefully one of them will get the role. So enough of setting everything up, let's take a look at my choices.
1. Bill Paxton
Bill Paxton physically resembles Negan to a tee, and he plays psychotic very well. He has a physique that is masculine and intimidating, a semi-square jaw, and if you think he doesn't play crazy well, then go watch his character on [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](tag:722469) Paxton has also played his fair share of bad mouthed characters, and that's the trait that's most important in Negan.
2. Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Jeffrey Dean Morgan has all the same traits of Bill Paxton, except that he's played this character before. The Comedian from Watchmen is Negan. He loves killing, the "F" word, and is straight up not right in the head. The way he played The Comedian, and with nothing big on his plate right now (aside from Texas Rising which is only a miniseries and [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) rumors), Morgan could be the perfect candidate for the role.
3. Ray Stevenson
Just like Paxton and Morgan, Ray Stevenson has the potential to be Negan ripped right off the page. He has the same masculine and conservatively muscular body type, and he's a much better actor than given credit for. He played a very dark and cold role as The Punisher, and aside from bit roles in Thor and Divergent, his schedule has been wide open. Stevenson mainly does movies, but he guest starred on Dexter, so he's obviously not opposed to doing TV. If a hit show like The Walking Dead wants Stevenson to play a role, I don't think he would be able to turn it down.
4. Tahmoh Penikett
This is where my choices start to differ from the comics a little. If Penikett was cast as Negan, I'm not saying he can't be funny and use the foul language that Negan loves, but he would be so much better as a serious character. I mean completely serious. Imagining Penikett with Lucille in his hands getting ready to kill somebody gives me chills. Negan has the potential for comic relief on the show, but I don't think we could find that in Penikitt. What we would find, however, is the perfect serious threat to the group.
5. Charlie Day
I know what you're thinking, but just hear me out. While Negan is supposed to be a physically menacing person, he's also supposed to provide some humor. One thing Robert Kirkman loves to do is differ from the comics, and there would be no better way to do that than by casting Charlie Day as Negan. Day can play crazy, we just haven't seen him play violent crazy. This could not only expand Day's career, but add a different characteristic to Negan. Everyone would underestimate him at first, but once he introduces Lucille to some skulls, the group will learn that he's the biggest threat they've faced yet.
6. Christopher Meloni
Here we go back to the faithful character we know. Christopher Meloni is perfect for Negan, because he does good comedy and drama/action roles. One of Meloni's biggest fears as an actor is being type cast, so he purposely takes roles he's never done before, and Negan would be one of those roles. He's played the hard-ass heckler type in the short lived Surviving Jack, and he's done a wide array of serious work just from his hit show Law and Order: SVU. While Meloni is a little smaller than some of the others on this list, he's still masculine enough to pull off the role, and would be eager to take such a different role.
7. Eli Roth
Look at that picture. The coat, the bat, add in a more modern gun, and Eli Roth's character from Inglorious Basterds is Negan. While Roth is a bigger name than some of the other people on this list, he isn't fully opposed to doing TV, and at this point everyone wants in on The Walking Dead. As long as Roth is fine with dawning a baseball bat again, he would make the perfect Negan.
8. Jon Hamm
Robert Kirkman has come out and said that Jon Hamm would be his first choice for Negan, and in turn Jon Hamm has said it would be fun to play the role, and he would do it if given the chance. So basically, if Kirkman just gave Jon Hamm a call, he could be Negan. And Robert Kirkman chose this guy for good reason. Hamm can play any role you put in front of him, and has the perfect body for Negan. If Hamm accepted the role, I don't think anyone would be upset.
9. Ben McKenzie
This might be a little into left field, but I think Ben McKenzie could very much pull off the role. On his show Gotham, one of the things I've noticed about him is that he is amazing at stare downs. Every time he has a conflict with someone, he gets right in their face to intimidate them, and I can imagine Negan trying to do that to Rick. Besides that, Ben is one of the best TV actors I've seen not on The Walking Dead, and his body at least somewhat resembles that of Negan's.
10. Donal Logue
While Donal Logue might be a little too old and rough looking, he can deliver the perfect balance of comedic value and pure evil that Negan posses. His friend from Gotham Robin Lord Taylor has played Sam on the show, so both Logue and McKenzie have a shoe in, and Logue favors the character from the comics at least a little bit.
What did you think? Do you have an actor that could play Negan? Let me know in the comments!
