If you haven't already heard, Nolan North, a voice acting veteran who has previously worked with Naughty Dog has revealed at Metrocon 2015 in Tampa, Florida, "I know they’re doing The Last of Us 2, but my character in The Last of Us had an untimely demise," If you're a bit of a TLoU superfan like me, then you're pooping your pants right now.
Following this reveal and social media exploding, Troy Baker, who voiced Joel, quickly denied knowing anything about a new TLoU project. What isn't true, we're not sure of, but there's definitely something up over at Naughty Dog with this legendary game. With that in mind, here's what we could expect from a new game sequel. Spoilers, by the way!
1.) More Joel and Ellie
- It is suggested in the ending of The Last of Us that things may not all be completely well..Especially seeing how Joel lied to Ellie about what went down at the hospital so that things could stay constant in their relationship. Ellie is way too smart not to catch on, if she hasn't already. Maybe Ellie figures it all out and decides to run away from Joel to try and save the world once and for all. We all loved playing as Ellie during the Winter chapter... how about for the most part of a new game (not a DLC)? Even is this isn't the game's premise but rather a feature of it's plot, we know that the dynamic/ dysfunctional duo are headed back to Tommy's to start anew. Maybe the game will expand more on the factions element of the game's online features, having Joel control keeping a whole group alive and attempting to expand this group across more and more of the US.
2.) A whole new story
- What made TLoU so brilliant was our emotional attachment to Joel and Ellie, as well as our investment in what happens. What if they decide to add in a couple of totally new characters for us to sink our teeth into (before sinking in our own tears again)? I mean, I know we're all open to seeing more of the beautifully creepy USA and maybe even the rest of the world. This would be an excellent opportunity for them to provide that to us. The down side to this is, of course, can they replicate the magic of the first one with entirely new characters? It would explain Baker's lack of involvement and my slight skepticism. The Last of Us 2 has a lot to live up to!
3.) The End of The Apocalypse
So, in the beginning of the first game, we get this awesome flash forward to '20 years later' after Joel loses Sarah and sh*t goes down. What if, this time, we get another similar flash back in which Joel is much older and Ellie is an adult?! How awesome would that be? Not only that, but what if the apocalypse is beginning to draw to a close, and Joel and Ellie have to ensure that civilization can rebuild itself somehow. Things are a bit of a mess right now what with the government, so could this also mean more Firefly action?
4.) A Technological Advance
-The Last of Us was really known for it's graphical greatness when it comes to technology. It was a beautiful game, but what if we could take that even further? No, I don't mean remasters or slightly improved graphics, I mean VR. Considering this is Sony we're talking about rather than Microsoft with their Hololens and the Oculus on the market for PC, this is probably a bit of a long shot.. but hey, how awesome could it be if amazing VR technology was incorporated into the more horror oriented sequences or the hunting game play?
5.) More Amazingness!
Last, but not least, Naughty Dog's sequel to what thousands describe as the best game they've ever played has to be absolutely brilliant. A crappy sequel cliche coming true would break our hearts! Seeing how well they did with the first installment, we can't imagine the same minds screwing up now, of course. We're in for a second emotional roller coaster with creepy clickers, scares, and butts at the edges of all seats.
Personally, I can't wait to see what they're doing with The Last of Us 2!
