We take look at Dogma a film from Kevin Smith, but is it heavenly or from the fiery depths of hell?
Hi, I am Ripstar and thanks for clicking on this post. Dogma is a 1999 Fantasy/Comedy film by Kevin Smith, it features a giant cast including: Chris Rock, Selma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Mews, Linda Fiorentino, Gorge Carlin and the director himself Kevin Smith. On a budget of around 10 million dollars, it is about two angels, Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) who have been banished from heaven. After some time they find a loophole, if they pass through the arches of the Catholic Church all their sins will be forgiven. Little do they know that by doing this they will erase existence itself. Because of this, God seeks the help of a young girl Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) and two stoners; Jay, (Jason Mews) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) to stop the two angels.
This movie Is Kevin’s Fourth Film and the only one I have seen, I have watched him on AMC’s ‘Comic Book Men’ which I love greatly, but I only just watched dogma recently because my friends put it on. I am glad he did because it is one of the best fantasy comedies I have ever seen.
The writing in this film is hilarious, I still have no real clue on why this film was so controversial. I mean they make fun of religion, but they are not saying “You are an idiot if you believe in god” or anything like that. Anyway. Loki and the Metatron are my favorite characters. This movie has the second best Loki I have seen on the big screen He is just how I think the angel of death would be, Funny and brutal. Just like Loki Metatron is an awesome character, he is kind of like the right hand man to god. As god cannot speak to humans without their heads being blown off (which is used in a few gags) So Metatron does all the talking. He has some of the funniest lines in the movie. Like I Said humor is great in this movie. Even the childish jokes are funny which is good. It has a good mix of childish and more intelligent jokes which makes it very entertaining. And poses some good questions like Is god male or female? Or where they any black people in the bible. (All light jokes of course). The story is also very funny and brilliant.
Acting is also great in the film stand outs being Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Gorge Carlin as the catholic priest; but the one who absolutely steals the show is Alan Rickman as Metatron. Like I said Metatron has some of the funniest lines in the movie, Alan Rickman’s performance makes these even funnier. The only character who I didn’t find funny was Bethany, but I think she is meant to be serious. Jason Lee is the main antagonist and is great. He is bouncy, fast and quick whited, even when delivering the darker lines.
Editing and VFX
From what I could tell not much CGI was used in this film at all, only too transition to practical models, Effects look a bit cheap but not too dated. This is especially good for a film of this budget. Editing is also good, nice and smooth, which is what a good edit should be. Vincent J. Guastini worked as the makeup and visual effects designer on this film. He has also worked on ‘The Green Hornet’ and ‘Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey’. I’d say he has done a wonderful job on this movie, particularly on the climax.
The Soundtrack by Howard Shore is nothing special, but is great accompanying music for the film. Mainly the Track that plays when the Stygian Triplets are about to attack. It reminds me of the Jaws Theme. Good with the movie, bland without.
Video Game Adaptations
There weren’t any.
I am extremely impressed with this film the more I research it. The movie is pretty much Kevin Smith’s he was involved in nearly every stage of production right down to video editing which was very impressive. Overall dogma is a great blend of fantasy, action, and comedy and I suggest that anybody who has not seen it, to go rent or buy it as soon as possible.
I give Dogma 10 Metatrons out of 10.
I would like to thank IMDB and the official Dogma Movie Site for providing the info for this review.
I have been Ripstar and this is the end!
