Skyrim raised the bar for the Elder Scrolls series in that Bethesda found a way to attract the attention of literally millions of gamers who previously hadn't engaged with the series: dragons! However, the dragons in Tamriel are very different to the traditional mythical beings. In the Elder Scrolls, dragons are Aedric spirits from before the linearity of time. They do not reproduce as they do in most other mythical worlds. After all in Skyrim, they had to be awoken.
Alduin brought the spirits of his fallen brothers back to life and now a lot of them are still spread throughout the lands of Tamriel. Alduin may have been defeated along with many of his companions - but the remaining dragons are still out there. But who can defeat them? Do we require a new Dovahkiin to absorb the power of their souls? Or can a powerful mage learn shouts and other spells to combat their presence?
Will We Need to Be A Dovahkiin in Elder Scrolls 6 to Combat Dragons?
There is only one alternative to actually killing these majestic beasts. The player could actually utilise powers that Skyrim: Dragonborn gifted us - the ability to temporarily tame and ride dragons. I find it highly unlikely that Bethesda will simply include a cinematic at the opening of Elder Scrolls 6 that describes how all of the remaining dragons were killed. Now that they've arrived in Tamriel once more, I'm sure they'll be sticking around.
As we know, the spoken language of dragons can be articulated to cast powerful magic known as Dragon Shouts, originated from the power known as the Voice, inherent to all dragons and their kin, the Dragonborn.
"Such power was also bestowed upon mortals by the efforts of Kyne and Paarthurnax, rendering men (and especially Nords) capable of shouting, with enough training."
Perhaps we'll still be able to command and defeat dragons in Elder Scrolls 6, but a new enemy will surface alongside them. In any case, we won't have to be a Dovahkiin to actually take down these beasts. We can be trained.
Can We Expect Dragons On the Release Date of Elder Scrolls 6?
Bethesda will have to give us something new to look forward to. If Dragons are the main adversary once more, Elder Scrolls 6 won't have the same level of excitement as Skyrim did before its release date. We'll need something else to focus our attention on, with perhaps the ability to control dragons or wipe out the remaining force as a side mission. In any case, I'm sure dragons will be a part of Elder Scrolls 6, the question is simply what their role will be.
What about you guys? Do you think dragons will return for Elder Scrolls 6? Do you want to be able to hunt them down? Or could we have them under our control in a very limited way? Not exactly a companion like we see with our dog in Fallout 4, but certainly as a means of transport. No fast travelling - just dragon riding. Let us know what you think in the comment below!
