From 1979 to 1985 a post apocalyptic movie series roamed the theater, and thirty years later the franchise is back and this time with a fury. Terrible pun aside "Mad Max: Fury Road" is a must see for not only Mad Max fans but for fans of action films, however this movie is not for everyone.
Brief Spoiler Free Summary
Mad Max serves as a sequel but also a soft reboot to the franchise meaning that you don't have to see the other films to see it. Some time after the events of the third film Max has been captured by the war boys, a brutal army of lunatics led by Immortan Joe. Soon after being captured he escapes and joins a group of people led by Imperator Furiosa who is trying to save a small group of women who were being held captive by Joe. Together they must rescue the women and survive the harsh wasteland.
They're many major characters in Mad Max: Fury Road so we'll only be looking at four of the many major characters.
I'll be honest and say I was skeptical of Tom Hardy as Max as I was not a fan of him in "The Dark Knight Rises" (although he was pretty good in "Inception"). But with only one Mad Max movie under his belt (for now at least), it's surprising but I believe he's already better then Mel Gibson as Max. However while I like him better as Max then Gibson, the character of Max in this movie is mixed for me. In the beginning of the movie he's not a very likable person and yes while he grows through the movie I just don't think he's even in the top three best characters of the movie.
The best character of this movie without a doubt is Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She is one of the strongest female characters in any action movie for a long time, hell i'd even go so far as to say of all time. She's badass, likable, and is the strongest of the main characters. It's about time Charlize Theron is in a good movie as some of her other movies are "A Million Ways to Die in the West", "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Astroboy".
Hugh Keays-Byrne plays as Toecutter, reprises his role from the original "Mad Max"....oh I'm sorry no he plays as Immortan Joe, a new original character. Now as far as I know Toecutter and Joe are not the same character so it's a little confusing since Hugh plays as both characters and both are the main antagonists of their films. Immortan Joe however is an extremely terrifying villain and steals every scene he's in with his amazing mask.
The final character I'll be talking about is Nux played by Nicholas Hoult who's best known as Beast from "X-Men: First Class" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and like Immortan Joe he steals every scene he's in. Nux goes through an arc in this movie and while I can't go into detail what it is as this is a spoiler free review, I can say the arc is amazing. It might be one of the best character arcs in an action movie I've seen in a while.
Talking about Vehicles is a strange topic for a review but I feel like I must talk about them. The vehicles in this movie are worth the price of the ticket. The designs of the vehicles really show how humanity has fallen and how insane these people are they can still make vehicles that cause chaos. It's very hard to describe how much I love these vehicles so the only thing I can say is watch the movie to see what I'm talking about.
In the beginning of the review I said this movie is not for everyone and that's kinda a problem. While I love this movie I will admit the strange villains and strange visuals can scare off people. Besides the visuals and characters that may drive people off there isn't really many big problems with the movie.
Mad Max: Fury Road is a mad film. There is no scene in this movie that is calm and peaceful. If you're looking for one of the best action movies in the past decade look no further then the Fury Road.
Next time we'll finally be divining into the hellhole abomination known as "Minions".
