Yes, I absolutely love films, but television shows definitely have a place in my heart, especially in recent years. So here is a brief summary of my favorites and what I consider the best of the best, fantasy television shows.
1. Game of Thrones
I know so many people now that literally refuse to start watching Game of Thrones because apparently it's become too 'mainstream' for them, well okay I understand you don't want to follow the crowd but their is a reason it's become so damn popular. IT IS AMAZING. IT IS LIFE. As this series follows the lives of the five main families ( and many others) that are all fighting over the iron throne, you are captured by the imagination and beauty of the different characters and the different landscapes. Plus there's DRAGONS. As a little side note I do not recommend for those that are faint of heart or averse to nudity...
I was a little late getting on this bus but it's admittedly absolutely brilliant, it's like ghostbusters got hot and added some demons and other supernatural things in. Definitely needed to be included on this must watch list. Also Dean and Sam Winchester are probably the cutest brothers I've ever seen on tv.
3. Once Upon a Time
This little gem really is brilliant, the way it manages to entwine the lives of our well known and loved fairy tales, heck they've even included Maleficent, Elsa and The Wicked Witch of The West. Not only is it genius, as a watcher you become completely wrapped up in the characters and their individual stories, it even makes you wonder if the bad guys are really the bad guys at all!
4. Penny Dreadful
Oh my goodness, well, I really can't get enough of this new series that has only just cropped up on the TV scene. It's only on to its second season but my god I can't wait for the future ones. This impeccable story revolves around the beautiful and dark, Miss Vanessa Ives. Like Once Upon a Time, it manages to entwine different myths and legends into one, although the series itself is much darker. At it's most basic summary, it is a constant battle between good and bad, shown through the emotions and personal horrors each character must face. Once more I advise against those whom do not like nudity.
5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Honestly it would have been a travesty if I didn't include this old timer. Okay so maybe not that old but still, it needed to be included. The name pretty much gives the entire theme away, that's it, you guessed it, Buffy is a vampire slayer, and oh yeah, she slays vampires. But truth be told, their is so much more to it than that. However the name is right, it does follow Buffy and her friends as they defend themselves and the people around them from dark creatures. Some of it's effects are admittedly a bit out dated these days, even comical at times, but this series definitely has a charm about it, once you start watching, you can't stop.
6. The Originals
This series is actually an off shoot from The Vampire Diaries (also a very good series although has got a bit silly as time has gone on due to lack of new ideas), it follows the lives of the 'original' vampire family. I'd say this is more for the younger generation but my mother absolutely loves it so, who knows. You've got vampires, werewolves and witches. What more could you ask for in a fantasy TV show. Also ALOT of good looking guys and gals. Great storylines and strong characters, my favorite concoction.
7. American Horror Story
In the words of Lauren (being me), this TV show is absolutely gorious (Glorious and Gory). Its just finished its fourth season and thus far, their haven't been many crossovers between seasons so you could pretty much watch them in any order you desire. It's got haunted houses, creepy asylums with demonic nuns, covens of witches and one hell of a sick circus. Its brilliant, I am yet to meet a person who doesn't like this show, it has something for everyone I think.
Hmm, this I feel is one of those shows that you might watch a repeat of when nothing else is on when suddenly you find yourself becoming a rapid follower. You may even lie to your friends and say 'Naaah that's something my mum watches' when secretly your its biggest fan. But regardless, this little witchy show certainly has it's charms (did you get it? Please tell me you got it).
In my humble eyes, the BBC has never created a better masterpiece than this beauty right here. We've got wizards, knights, witches, dragons and a whole load of other mythical creatures. Also we've got the brilliant banter of our dear Merlin who in my opinion is one of the funniest wizards I've ever had the pleasure of watching. If you haven't seen this, GET ON YOUR LAPTOP, DO SOME ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING AND WATCH THIS SHOW. I should add that your really ought to watch it from series one otherwise it may not make the most sense.
It is entirely possible that I could like this show more than I should because I like greek mythology and I like how they've represented it, but I do believe it has its own merits with it's grecian heroes and its magical deity worship. It's a great story and you can't help but fall in love with the cute character that are constantly making you giggle. Definitely one to watch with the family!
Now I know their are TONNES of good fantasy shows out their, admittedly I know more about the British ones than the American ones because they don't come on my TV, BUT their are definitely some other goodens which I'll quickly mention as must watches:
1. Walking Dead
2. Doctor Who (although I class this as a sci-fi)
4. Sabrina the Teenage Witch
5. True Blood
7. Being Human
8. Lost Girl
9. Teen Wolf
10. Sleep Hollow
And many many more.
