(Warning: mild potential - if unlikely - SPOILERS for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and any Superman sequel, lie below...Tread softly, etc. etc.)

So, sure - between Lex Luthor, a rumored Joker cameo, a possible confrontation with Aquaman, and, of course, that central battle with the Dark Knight himself, Superman is already set to have his hands full in next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Of course, since he's freaking Superman, he'll most likely come out of the whole thing largely unscathed, but even so - that's a lot of enemies for one movie.

As it turns out, though:

Superman Almost Had Another Foe Entirely

Specifically, that guy - the long-serving (and lethal) Superman villain Metallo.

Otherwise known to fans of the comics as 'that dastardly cyborg with the Kryptonite power source and a serious problem with Superman'...

...who was originally (depending on which continuity you prefer) either a journalist, a con-man or a soldier named John Corben, transformed after an accident into a super-powerful cyborg...

...and, as these things so often seem to go, he soon found himself fighting (and spectacularly failing to kill) Superman, despite that aforementioned Kryptonite 'heart':

As it turns out, though, Metallo almost had the chance to try his luck on the big screen. Y'see:

Metallo Was Almost Man of Steel 2's 'big bad'...

"Trust me John, you dodged a bullet..."
"Trust me John, you dodged a bullet..."

That's right - back when DC and Warner Bros. were seriously considering a direct sequel to Man of Steel, as opposed to the Batman v Superman-shaped superhero smackdown that we're now set to see, it apparently very much looked as though Metallo would've been the villan. As Zack Snyder revealed to EW recently:

"I remember talking about 'What's the next villain?'...'We can't do another alien invasion.' Brianiac was definitely down the road. Metallo, I think, was going to be the main bad guy of this movie."

The most intriguing part of that?

There've long been rumors that Metallo might still turn up in Batman v Superman, in some sort of supporting or introductory role...

Could Metallo Still Make an Appearance, Then?

After all - a certain Scoot McNairy has in the past been heavily rumored to be playing the villain in Batman v Superman - and him playing a pre-Metallo John Corben (with Lex Luthor turning him into a cyborg near the movie's end) could both make a whole lot of narrative sense considering Luthor's rumored interest in Kryptonite, and nicely set up a future film or two in the process...

Or, y'know, he could just be yet another of the great missed opportunities of DC movies that never were...

What do you think, though?
