How do you get young people interested in dreary, 19th century English literature? Simple. Add zombies to it.
That's the winning formula discovered by Seth Grahame-Smith when he penned the 2009 parody novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The book was quickly snapped up for a motion picture adaptation (perhaps mostly due to the fact the copyright has elapsed on Pride and Prejudice. Suck it Jane Austen) and has recently begun production after a few years of being passed around Hollywood.
Recently, Entertainment Weekly released a series of stills showing the Bennet sisters tooling up for Georgian zombie mayhem. Check them out below:
Although the original book is clearly a tongue-in-cheek parody, according to EW, director Burr Steers is taking the whole thing rather seriously. He stated:
The idea was that it was Pride and Prejudice set in this alternate world and then for everyone to play it straight. The movie’s big wink is that there is no big wink.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stars Lily James, Matt Smith, Ski Waterhouse, Sam Riley, Douglas Booth, Lena Headey and Charles Dance. It's due to arrive in theaters on February 5, 2016.
